Assuming the Padres are still in contention a month from now I would love to see them go out and get a few upgrades (I was super excited in 2010 when they got Miguel Tejada). If you were the GM in this buying situation who are a few players you would target, and why? Suggested format of player choice is one player who would be mildly helpful but would be easy to trade for, one player who would be very helpful but would need to be gone after fairly aggressively, and the last one should be the player you would go all out to acquire despite it seeming hopeless.
The ambitious but doable trade I would go for would be to get Jake Peavy back from the Whitesox. I think it would be awesome if we dumped Peavy on the Whitesox for his injured years, then got him back One year after him getting healthy again. It would be even better if Peavy had a Kevin Brown type start in the post season.
Finally, I would sell the farm to pry Giancarlo Stanton from the Marlins. He is young, affordable (for now), and super exciting to watch.
Bonus question: What kind of package do you think it would take to get Stanton?
I have thought about this quite a bit, and have no idea. I have tried looking at the Miguel Cabrera trade as a reference, but that has not helped. What I have come up with is a package of Venable, Liriano, Hedges, and Quackenbush. The idea is Venable could play right until Liriano is ready and I threw in two more prospects. Another prospect would probably be required, although I don't know who that would be.
Now, show me what kind of GM you would be.
