Good for Pedro Ciriaco being traded to Padres for prbnl
— Peter Gammons (@pgammo) June 14, 2013
Pedro Ciriaco, a 27 year old infielder, is being traded to San Diego for a player to be named later. With Jedd Gyorko on the shelf for a bit, the Padres were looking to help their infield with this move. Ciriaco was designated for assignment by the Boston Red Sox on Monday and is out of options. This means that he will have to be placed on the 25 man roster when he gets here, thus someone will have to be sent down. Jaff Decker recently was brought up from Tucson, so he may be sent back down without having had an at-bat. It could also be Jesus Guzman being moved to give Ciraco the roster spot. We'll find out soon.
In Boston last year, he had 272 plate appearances and batted .293 with 15 doubles, 2 HR, 19 RBI, and 16 SBs. But, his stats in 58 PA this year leave a lot to be desired.
Should be interesting to see how the roster move will play out to allow Pedro Ciriaco to join the team. But until then, welcome to the Padres.
Update
Away from computer, but the #Padres just made Ciriaco deal official. He will be on 25-man roster. Darnell DFA.

James Darnell played 25 games for the Padres over the last 2 seasons. However, multiple injuries caused him to miss a lot of playing time during his career. In May, he underwent his 3rd surgery for his left shoulder, which Bill Center reported as career threatening.
