It was a perfect afternoon here in San Diego and I can't believe I just ruined it by watching four hours of indoor baseball. Oh well. It was fun in the first inning when Will Venable and Carlos Quentin hit home runs to give the Padres a 2-0 lead.
In the 3rd, Venable struck out but hustled to first on a dropped third strike. Then he stole second and third base. Later he scored on a balk giving the Padres a 3-0 lead.
That's about where the fun came to an end. The Padres struck out 18 times in the game. A big deal was made of the fact that Alex Cobb set a major league record by pitching fewer than 5 innings while striking out 13.
The Rays for their part scored 6 and after each and every one they celebrated. They did it by pulling imaginary arrows out of their imaginary quivers and shooting them into the crowd. People in Florida are really weird.
Burch Smith makes his debut tomorrow.
GO PADRES!
