Jedd Gyorko hit his first Major League home run tonight in an otherwise dreadful 3 hit loss. If you missed the game in its entirety like I did, just missed the homer or want to relive the magic you can watch it here.
Per tradition, Cubs fan threw the ball back on the field, thinking that it would erase the run from the game. Didn't work for some reason. Really it only made sure that Gyorko would get the ball and treasure it forever. I kind of wish that teams were really mean to each other and instead of throwing the ball into the dugout, they refused to give it up and used it taunt the player. Then the Padres would be forced to steal a Cubs player's glove or kidnap the mascot or something, in order to negotiate a swap for the ball, like a hostage exchange.
I digress...
Chase Headley bookended the game with the other two hits. One was a blooper into left field in the first inning and the latter was a home run to right in the 9th.
Those runs didn't mean a whole lot though because Andrew Cashner didn't seem to understand that your supposed to dominate your former team. Cody Ransom, Anthony Rizzo and Scott Hairston knew, but not Cashner. Instead he only lasted 4 innings giving up a butt load of runs.
