suffice to say, this is not how we, the fans, have envisioned the beginning of our year. yes, we're only 6 games into the season, so it's not panic time, but i just wonder what the padres' plan is. i mean, josh byrnes has been less than stellar in his decisions for the franchise thus far. his "big" signings are two injury-prone name players who will not really help this team be successful if/when we reach full potential. carlos quentin and huston street are two solid players, but their contracts make no sense; why didn't we use that money to sign chase headley? byrnes refused to trade headley at the deadline last year, yet he will not offer a comparable contract. is byrnes just biding the time so we can get a draft pick in return? this makes no sense. on top of that, the pads were reportedly offered a young arm in rick porcello for street and that was turned down too. again, this makes no sense either; why not get rid of that contract and put some of that towards resigning headley?
i get that the astros' approach is looked down upon because of the way they are handling their big club now, but at least jeff lunhow has a plan in place; be awful and garner good draft picks to make their next big run look like the nationals. the pads do have a good minor league system, so why not bring some of them up and use them now? i just wonder if kyle blanks couldn't do what carlos quentin is doing now; both have had injuries, both don't run well, both have good power. why not use blanks in LF and see what he can do? save that money for the guys who we want to lock up long term.
josh byrnes is making me really wonder what he is trying to do with the franchise. seems the ownership gave him the OK to spend, yet he spends it on guys who don't make sense for the team right now. we'll have quentin and street's contracts when they are on the DL and watching headley be an all star for another franchise at this rate. i certainly hope that byrnes has a plan up his sleeve, but as of now, this season looks like a big question mark with an eye brow raised VERY high.
