Porcello!

just came across this on ESPN Insider:

Despite being just 24 years old with 48 major league wins under his belt, Porcello still hasn't earned management's confidence. The concerns are warranted: In 2012, opposing batters hit .310 against Porcello, the highest of all qualifying starting pitchers by a 20-point margin. (Of course, some of that can be blamed on the Tigers' mediocre infield defense.)

This winter, Porcello spent time with Tigers pitching coach Jeff Jones to address mechanical flaws and redefine his repertoire. He has decided to ditch his inconsistent slider and focus on improving his curve. Jones said the changes in Porcello's delivery have helped him to get more "carry" on his pitches, likely by using his lower body more or focusing on extension in his release point. The likely results will be better velocity, later life and more ground balls.

Porcello has seen his velocity increase over his career, touching 94-95 mph more frequently than ever. That is not unusual for a pitcher his age. Qualified evaluators will tell you that PED-free velocity jumps can be anticipated through about age 25. The increase has been so significant this year that catcher Alex Avila told Fox Sports Detroit's Rod Allen that he now must have separate signs for Porcello's four-seam and two-seam fastballs, something they hadn't done in the past.

While it's never a good idea to read too much into spring stats, the fact that Porcello didn't walk a single batter in 24 innings is extremely encouraging. With the added benefit of increased velocity, a much better breaking ball and potentially elite command, he very well may be entering a new phase in his career.

again, why is josh byrnes unwilling to trade huston street for him? porcello would be better than volquez/richard any day of the week. this is something to reconsider.
