Padres Opening Day Payroll Third Highest In Club History

Mike Stobe

When the Padres began the season on Monday, they did so with the 3rd most expensive team they have ever fielded.

During the offseason you may have heard plenty about the Padres being cheap or not spending or something else along those lines. Those stories are fine, but when it comes to facts and figures there have only been two teams in the Padres history that fielded a higher paid team on Opening Day. According to Cot's Contracts the Padres owe $68,333,600 to the players currently on the 25 man roster and on the restricted and disabled lists. That's a total of 32 players and an average of $2,135,425 per player.

The two teams that bested that $68 million sum were a contrast in results. In 2006, the Padres owed $69,896,642 to their opening day roster. That team went 88-74 and won the National West before getting bounced from the playoffs by the St. Louis Cardinals, who had won the NL Central with only 83 wins and would go on to win the World Series. They also made some trades (David Wells, Russell Branyan, Todd Walker) that would push the payroll over $70 million by year end. In 2008, the Padres promised $73,677,616 to their initial roster. That team finished 63-99, only the Nationals and Mariners finished with worse records that season. They also made some late season trades that reduced the amount they paid in the end, but it was still over $70 million.

That third overall ranking, while nice in that at least the team isn't being historically stingy, should waver too many thoughts on how the team spends. There has been plenty of inflation over the franchise's history to justify cost increases. Not only in the non-baseball economy, but also in player salaries. Just looking at the minimum salaries will tell you that. $490K is the lowest salary on the team, but you only have to go back about a decade to find that the minimum salary has increased at least 25% in that time.

Here's how the 2013 payroll breaks down:
