Padres Assistant GM A.J. Hinch interviewed by Darren Smith

Mighty XX: Interview with A.J. Hinch with Darren Smith (MP3)

  • Hinch has spent 47 days in Arizona. It's the longest Spring Training he can remember. "We're a little overcooked, it's time to go."
  • The Padres have deadlines to make decisions. Much like cramming for test, they wait as long as possible before making a decision.
  • There are 3 spots still open on the roster. One rotation and two bullpen. Tyson Ross, Andrew Cashner, Anthony Bass and Tommy Layne. Those decisions have to be made by Sunday.
  • Kyle Blanks is still in camp in case Carlos Quentin has any injury issues arise. The Padres want Quentin in the lineup for the final games of Spring Training to get him last minute at bats, so he can get his timing down. All signs are pointing in the right direction for Quentin.
  • Eric Stults and Jason Marquis have a long break until their first start of the regular season. Hinch says they'll use the exhibition games in San Antonio to give everyone some mound time.
  • Tyson Ross and Andrew Cashner are in the mix for the 25 man roster, but nothing is official until Buddy Black and Josh Byrnes say so. They have to make a strategic decision as to whether they want a second left hander or pitcher that can throw more innings. They have not considered a 6 man rotation.
  • You need to handle pitchers coming off injuries differently. There's different ways to manage workloads of these pitchers.
  • Edinson Volquez's release point is all over the map when throwing his change-up. The catcher's just need to encourage him to recalibrate.
  • Yasmani Grandal will stay in Arizona for extended Spring Training serving out his 50 game PED suspension. He can participate in games in AZ. He can go out on a rehab assignment 10 games prior to his suspension being over.
  • Jedd Gyorko came up as a 3B and will be used there to get Alexi Amarista in the lineup. He'll also get plenty of time at 2B to give Cody Ransom playing time. "The reality is he's really good second basemen." He's a comfortable baseball player on either side of the diamond.
  • Hinch isn't sure if Right Field will be a straight platoon between Chris Denorfia and Will Venable based on right and left handed pitchers. Black will make the decision based on the style of pitcher.
