The 2010 Padres were one of the top 5 defensive teams of the decade

Everybody's favorite Padres team that didn't go to the playoffs and a Jon Garland mention, coming up... NOW!

John Dewan's Stat of the Week is out and the Padres get some chatter. The Defensive Runs Saved metric is 10 years old and in those 10 years, the 2010 Padres team had the 5th best season defensively.

Now, I know what you're saying. I seen the news! Of course they're super defensive! They lie about all kinds of sh_t! They gotta defend themselves against the truth!

And that's what I thought at first too, but this stat apparently measures defensiveness in terms of play on the field as opposed to obscure metrics measuring the non-effectiveness filthy lies, the distance between a quote and context and/or time spent obsessing over obscure marketing promises from the entertainment industry.

But I digress.

No the 2010 team was apparently awesome, which we all kinda knew and Jon Garland got got called out for "superlative" play.

The Padres did not have a player reach 20 Runs Saved, but they had six players with at least 7, including starting-pitcher Jon Garland, a superlative defensive contribution for a pitcher.

Superlative.
