Despite being the bottom two teams in the NL West going into this series, San Diego and Colorado are two of the hottest teams in the league right now. The Rockies are coming off a loss to the Dodgers, but have won eight out of their last 11 games. Our Padres are on an even hotter streak, going 9-1 over their last 10 games.
The Rockies will try to keep us from going on a winning streak by sending Alex White to the mound. White has been on a strict pitch count, going only four innings in each of his last five starts and throwing no more than 85 pitches in each of his last nine. Because of his pitch limit, he hasn't factored into a decision since June 24th, and hasn't recorded a win since June 3rd. However, Colorado has won five of the last six games he started.
His last time out, White gave up three runs (two earned) on five hits and a walk while striking out four. He has pitched twice against our Padres in his career, possessing a 1-1 record in 11 1/3 total innings. One of those starts was this season on May 8th, when he took a tough-luck loss in San Diego as he surrendered two earned runs in 6 1/3 innings.
We will counter with the rock solid Clayton Richard, who has been phenomenal lately. He's gone 4-1 in August, including a complete game shutout and two eight-inning appearances. However, Richard has had a rough career against the Rockies, especially at Coors Field. He is 1-4 all-time against the Rockies. In five starts at Coors Field, he is 0-3 with a 9.00 ERA. He has made one start against them this year, also at Coors Field, giving up eight earned runs on ten hits in 5 1/3 innings. He will aim for his first career win in Colorado tonight, which would put him at 12-12 on the season.
