The Left Handed Pinch Hitter Extraordinaire and Token Veteran presence in the clubhouse will be with the team another year. Kotsay was signed to a very team friendly 1 year, $1.25M this past offseason and has provided a number of clutch hits in the pinch hitter role as well as a platoon option in both left and right field. Much of his starts came while Carlos Quentin recovered from a knee injury or as the left handed starting option when Quentin needed a day off after returning. He'll likely reprise all those roles in 2013. He can also play 1B, but with Jesus Guzman working as Yonder Alonso's caddy, we haven't seen much of that this year.
This will probably be seen as a good move in the clubhouse. There's a team consistency theme that's going on here on top of Kotsay being a guy the younger players look up to.
