As the invisible soldier dragged Chase Headley away, the Magic Flying Ball laughed maniacally. "NOW WE WILL SEE WHO RULES THE CRYSTAL KINGDOM, LORD HEADLEY!!! THE BUTTERFLIES WILL BE MINE!!!"
After coming down to the last minute, the winner of the Chase Headley Sweepstakes is the San Diego Padres! Through rampant speculation, only the San Diego Padres were able to meet the high price tag that the San Diego Padres required of Chase Headley.
In acquiring Chase Headley, the Padres gave up a second round draft pick, retroactively used in the 2005 amateur draft and have agreed to let him wear the number 7, which is the number that he wore with the San Diego Padres. Headley will likely play third base for the Padres, creating something of a log jam at the position with top prospect Jed Gyorko looking to be major league ready in the near future.
Chase Headley's contract is only good for this year, which the Padres will have to address when the time comes. For now, being solid "buyers", the Padres apparently feel that acquiring Chase Headley is exactly what the team needs to contend today.
