LOS ANGELES, CA - JULY 13: Clayton Richard #33 of the San Diego Padres watches a bunt single from the ground by Tony Gwynn #10 of the Los Angeles Dodgers during the sixth inning at Dodger Stadium on July 13, 2012 in Los Angeles, California. (Photo by Harry How/Getty Images)
Clayton Richard was really okay tonight. Clayton Kershaw was just okay tonight. It was a pitchers duel if I ever saw one. The Padres suffered as they usually do by failing to hit with runners in scoring position. They had their opportunities but failed to capitalize.
In the top of the 2nd inning Everth Cabrera grounded out to score Yasmani Grandal. The score was 1-0 and everything was going swimmingly until the bottom of the 6th. That's when Mark Ellis homered to left scoring Jerry Hairston and himself. The ball was lost in a sea of beach balls.
Check out this catch by Cameron Maybin. He caught the ball and a bunch of turf in his teeth. I saw some people on twitter questioning whether Maybin dogged it a little off the bat so that he could make a glorious grab. That's crazy talk. I don't see any evidence of him slowing up.
That was the ball game.
