The Cleveland Indians are trying to deal for San Diego Padres outfielder Carlos Quentin, reports Terry Pluto of The Plain Dealer:

The Indians are trying to deal for Carlos Quentin, but I've been told that they don't have much common ground with the Padres right now. They have talked about adding a starting pitcher. They intend to keep talking.

There are several possible scenarios involving Quentin that could take place this year. The Padres could decide to sign him to an extension, given the lack of offense on their current roster. San Diego could also look to trade him for prospects this summer.

The Padres may also decide to hang onto him for the season and risk watching him walk this winter if they don’t like the offers they’re receiving or if they hope to reach an extension with him at some point prior to free agency.

Due to the lack of hitting available on the trade market, most teams seeking a bat this summer have been tied to Quentin, including the Indians, Cincinnati Reds, Pittsburgh Pirates, Miami Marlins, Detroit Tigers, Toronto Blue Jays and Los Angeles Dodgers.

Quentin, 29, is earning $7.025 million this year and is hitting .268/.406/.518 with seven doubles, seven home runs and 17 RBIs over his 112 at-bats.
