RHP Bass Hits DL With Shoulder Inflammation

The San Diego Padres have placed right-hander Anthony Bass on the 15-day disabled list with shoulder inflammation, reports Chelsea Janes of MLB.com. Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com is reporting that the Padres will call up veteran Kip Wells to start Tuesday’s game in place of Bass:

Bass was forced to leave Wednesday’s start against the Texas Rangers after experiencing discomfort in his shoulder. The Padres are hoping that Bass won't be required to miss too many starts due to the injury.

After spending much of the 2011 season successfully pitching out of the Padres’ bullpen, Bass has transitioned to starter this year due to San Diego’s rash of injuries. On the season, the 24-year-old has maintained an ERA and WHIP of 4.70 and 1.340. Bass becomes the sixth Padres starting pitcher on the DL.

Wells last appeared in a major league game in 2009 as a member of the Cincinnati Reds. The 35-year-old made seven starts for the Padres Triple-A affiliate this season, posting an ERA and WHIP of 4.97 and 1.737 over his 38 innings of work.
