Padres Felled, Man, By Feldman

Day: Not his. (Jake Roth-US PRESSWIRE)

The Padres pieced together a few runs over various innings, but it was not enough to overcome two bad innings by starting pitcher Edinson Volquez. Volquez allowed 4 walks in the game. The first 3 came in the 2nd inning when he walked the bases loaded with one out. He escaped that jam by offering up Mitch Moreland's hamstring to the great Kouzmanoff (I didn't know you could sacrifice body parts on the other team until this). In the 3rd he allowed his final walk, but it was sandwiched in between an Ian Kinsler single and a Josh Hamilton triple. He had struck out Hamilton in the 1st inning, a man he was traded for back in 2007, but this time the slugger returning from a stomach illness got the best of him.

In the 6th, Volquez came back out to pitch even with his pitch count at 96 pitches and having labored in many of his innings due to control issues. He ending up giving up 3 consecutive hits that led to 3 runs. Bud Black had a chance to pinch hit for the tiring pitcher, but instead asked him to bunt. Edinson struck out helping to curtail the potential rally. The Padres had their own chances to rally with their 11 total hits in the game. Unfortunately, Rangers starter Scott Feldman was stingy with walks and extra base hits (he allowed none of either, as did his bullpen in their 3 innings of work) and the Friars only ended up getting a single run in each of their 3 promising opportunities.

Still the team can be buoyed by Cameron Maybin and Nick Hundley both picking up two hits a piece. Chase Headley also had two and Everth Cabrera stole a base to make him a perfect 10 for 10 on the season. Carlos Quentin, however, had a rough day with 3 strikeouts in an 0 for 4 effort.
