It was just an ordinary Petco Park pitchers duel until the 8th inning. That's when Andrew Cashner had an 89 mph change up get away from him that DBack Chris Young thought was a little high and tight for his liking. Though obvious to everyone but Chris Young that it was not meant to hit him he started jawing at Cashner from first base. Maybe he should be a little more careful, he said.
That caused the benches and bullpens to walk lackadaisically onto the field as if a really boring, slow motion, rumble were about to happen. Nothing came of it, but it seemed to light a spark under the Padres offense.
In the bottom of the 8th the real beat down began. Alexi Amarista legged out a bunt to get on base and Jesus Guzman hit a home run to left center field to break the 1-1 tie. Then Cameron Maybin hit a triple that drove home all around good guy Chris Denorfia.
Then Carlos Quentin drove in Maybin with a base hit to center that scored another run. Quentin was promptly replaced by the speedy Anthony Bass. Nick Hundley hit a sac fly that Justin Upton didn't catch and Bass and Alonso scored to finish the inning's scoring 7-1.
I'm predicting that the Padres claim their first series sweep of the season this weekend.
