Carlos Quentin joins the 100 HBP club

Carlos Quentin's first inning HBP yesterday against Felix Hernandez might have looked, to the casual observer, like just another event in the first inning of an interleague game that ultimately didn't produce anything on the scoreboard - but it was actually a historic occasion. Carlos Quentin became the 71st major league player to get hit by 100 pitches in his career, and the first to do so in a San Diego Padres uniform. The Padres have been part of only two other 100 plunk club initiations, having thrown the 100th career plunk of Barry Bonds and Jeff Bagwell's careers (7/1/2006 and 5/29/2001).

Also, and more impressively, Quentin is just the 13th player ever to reach 100 plunks before his 30th birthday. Seven of those 13 reached 100 HBPs by the year 1901, so Q! is just the 6th modern player to get hit 100 times by his 30th birthday. The most recent one was Jason Kendall on August 3, 2000.

Here's the full list of players who cracked 100 HBPs before reaching age 30:

Carlos Quentin - 6/12/2012
Jason Kendall - 8/3/2000
Chet Lemon - 4/10/1984
Don Baylor - 4/28/1979
Ron Hunt - 9/20/1969
Frank Robinson - 9/12/1964
Fred Clarke - 1901
Dan McGann - 1900
John McGraw - 1900
Hughie Jennings - 1896
Jake Beckley - 1896
Tommy Tucker - 1890
Curt Welch - 1890

(Rickie Weeks can join this club this year if he gets hit 2 more times before September 13th)
