Padres Game Rankings 2012: Almost a perfect weekend

I got some catching up to do...

The standings prior to the April 26th game to get reacquainted with this strange little project:

All clear where we're at? Good.

So on April 26th, Edinson Volquez pitched an amazing game with no run support. I say "amazing" in the context of not knowing what would happen Friday nor Saturday. The Chicken made an appearance. The Padres showed some grit and came back from behind. Andrew Cashner and Huston Street held things down. Great win. Pitchers duel that went the way of the good guys and we prevented the sweep. I might be biased because I went to that game, but I'm actually placing that one just behind Denorfia bomb and in front of Doublefest. Honestly, in my own opinion, I like the pitching duels at home that go our way and I still can't shake the surrounding games in Colorado.

On April 27th, Cory Luebke finally got some run support in San Francisco, mainly thanks to Nick Hundley going 4for4, and the Padres won a solid victory in San Francisco. I really like beating the Giants, but I can't shake how this was an ugly win. There was improvement, but again with the three errors and again with the sloppy play. Still, this one manages to land itself just in front of Denorfia bomb.

And then we come to yesterday. If you asked at the end of the season, which loss I think you should watch to give you hope for the future, it might've been yesterday's win. Anthony Bass, who isn't even projected to be the best pitcher of all of the pitching talent we have coming up, pitched a perfect game through 5 2/3 innings and only made a couple of mistakes before the Padres lost the game 2-1. At the same time, that's such a heartbreaking loss. But it was fantastic for Anthony Bass. It feels like even if the Padres had all the factories in Shenzhen, they wouldn't be able to manufacture a single run. At least not in the traditional sense of the term. Our manufacturing process looks like:

  1. Get a single
  2. Forget how to steal bases so rely on sacrifice bunts with your best hitter from last year up to the plate
  3. With man on second strike out three times in a row (or something similar)

So for that, I hated the game, but for Anthony Bass I loved the game. I shall split the difference and put the game right smack dab in the middle and let the rest of the season decide what that means.

Take a look at the full standings after the jump.
