Petco Park's dimensions may be shrunk by new scoreboard in right field

You may have heard from a billion different sources that the Padres are considering moving in the fences in right field to combat Petco Park's size, humidity and gravitational pull. I'm not really sure why talk is only ever focused on right field's "death valley", I think they should bring in all the fences. Pick up and move the Western Metal Supply Building in a quarter inch if you have to, just make sure I am entertained. In 2005 when they moved the fences in right center the first time it was only a modest change that didn't do a lick of good.

But I guess we have no choice but to just trust the Padres know what they're doing. They say they''ve been studying the problem and possible solutions for years. We hear they're looking at past statistics including bat speeds, ball trajectories, spin rates and radar readings. I've even heard whispers that they're using alien technology that NASA recovered and reverse engineered. It's all very scientific.

Needless to say, I'm fascinated by their scientific method and wish I knew more. Now this bit from Tom Krasovic makes the cynic in me wonder...

I know this: If the Padres do shorten right field, they'd like to install a hand-operated, old-style scoreboard where the out-of-town scoreboard is.

What if all the research the Padres have done just happens to conclude that the right field fence should be moved in the exact width of a new prefab old-style out-of-town scoreboard? I'm going to be really disappointed. I want these changes to increase the entertainment value at Petco in the worst way and I'm not particularly entertained by looking at some guy hand-operating out of town scores. So if the scoreboard will be the method they use to shrink the field, then fine, but I hope that they will make aggressive changes if needed. Let's turn this sucker into a hitter's haven!

UPDATE: Just got word that the scoreboard is not the reason they are moving the fences and will not drive the dimensions.
