Padres extend Cory Luebke through 2015, $12 million

Assuming nothing happens over the next five days leading up to the opener, the Padres have just shown you the core of their Major League team for the next three years. Cory Luebke, yet another solid performer (YASP) for the San Diego Padres will be under contract for the next three years and if everybody's happy after that, potentially for the next five years, as the club holds options for 2016 and 2017 as well.

So here's your core and potentially the jerseys to go after if you're the type to get a jersey with somebody's name on the back of it, "Killa" Cameron Maybin, Nick Hundley and Cory Luebke. I like the sound of that.

Odd man out right now is still Chase Headley, who's under contract through 2012.

Bill Center has more details:

Luebke, who was already signed for this season for $500,000, will get a $500,000 signing bonus. He will make $1 million in 2013, $3 million in 2014 and $5.25 in 2015. The contract calls for Luebke to make $7.5 million in 2016 against a club buyout of $1.75 million and $10 million in 2017 against a club buyout of $250,000.

ChickenFriars has a great breakdown of this type of deal:

This contract falls in line with some of the best we’ve seen in recent years. Organizations like Tampa Bay and Boston have really set the standard for long-term extensions, and this deal mirrors some from those organizations. . . . They essentially have bought out all of his arbitration eligible years and, if the two club options are picked up, one year of free agency.

And if you missed it before, be sure to watch my discussion with Kevin Goldstein of Baseball Prospectus discussing almost exactly this type of deal. Not too rich and not too poor, but juuuust right (starting at 1:42):

All in all, this looks like a good extension. We'll see how others continue to break it down.
