Remember when we were counting down the days until pitchers and catchers reported? Now here we are on the 37th day of Spring Training. Ten days away from Opening Day and the beginning of what could be the Padres' best season evar!
Our boys will face the Cubs again today in Mesa. The team is coming off a win against the Cubs on Saturday and a win against the Diamondbacks yesterday. Overall, they have won 12 of their last 15 games and are just two games back from first in the Cactus League standings and one game back from first in the National League standings. I know, I know, it's ONLY Spring Training. But it's more fun to celebrate all of our victories than to just dismiss the ones that "don't count."
Tim Stauffer, who had a solid start against the Dodgers last week, is scheduled for six innings today. This will be one of his last chances to prove himself worthy of the Opening Day starting job, but I think anyone who has been paying attention during the Spring and can also do simple math would know that the job is already his. So mostly this will just be a chance to get some innings in before the regular season starts.
Luke Gregerson, Brad Brach, and Ernesto Frieri will each pitch an inning out of the 'pen. Cameron Maybin is still out of the lineup after being a late scratch in yesterday's game. Bud Black said that he just wanted to give Cam a day off yesterday, since he's been playing a lot, so hopefully this is just another day off for him and not something more serious.
