The Jersey is Traveling and the Sisterhood is born

Photo

The Sisterhood of the Traveling Jersey is a Gaslamp Ball community project that will chronicle the 2012 Padres season through the lives of their greatest fans and an old jersey.

Well I mailed off Dave Staton's spring training jersey to Gaslamp Baller Nater Tater in Yuma, Arizona. It seemed appropriate to get it back to its one time home before it's long journey around the world.

I bought a Scotch Smart Mailer at Target for a couple bucks over the weekend and took it to the Post Office today during lunch. Using their automated machine I weighed the jersey (just over 12 oz.) and purchased first class postage for $3.30. I realized that I've now invested over $30 into this project and couldn't help but wonder if it would succeed.

I looked at the parcel one last time and thought of Han Solo's line in Return of the Jedi after he handed over the keys of the Millenium Falcon to Lando.

"I've just got a funny feeling, like I'm never gonna see her again"

I thought of all the good times that jersey and I had had at Padres Fan Fest. How we took a tour of the clubhouse together, threw in the bullpen and hugged Pad Squad Loxie. So many memories.

Whatever.

I tossed the jersey into the mail bin and didn't look back. Now the success of Sisterhood of the Traveling Jersey is in your hands. Give it safe passage.

Godspeed.

P.S. - We need someone to take it to Spring Training.

UPDATE: We've got 35 people who have volunteered to be part of the Sisterhood so far. I have 5 addresses. I'm making a list. Email me (jbox at gaslampball dot com) your username, name, address and any special requests.

If we previously indicated that we wanted to participate, how do we get you our addresses? Translation: I wanna wear the jersey.

Is there going to be a calendar, or how is this going to work?

by shawman35 on Feb 21, 2012 3:29 PM PST via mobile reply actions

I'm not real sure yet

There are some people that requested certain times, and we’ll try and get it to them, but we’ll need others just willing to get it whenever.

So with each person that gets the jersey I guess I’ll email them the next address that they need to send it to.

I’m making this up as I go.

pretty excited to be apart of this & to see how this ends up

what would morrissey do?

Dave Staton

was “famous” (by GLB standards anyway) for being a slow runner. I like that his jersey is now traveling by one of the slowest means possible.

I'm glad you didn't think of the Han Solo line from The Empire Strikes Back...

The scene opens with Jbox placing the jersey gently into the parcel. He closes the box and gingerly hands the box, as if it were a new born child, to the postal clerk. Jbox gazes lovingly through the box and “sees” the jersey inside and says.

JBox: I love you.

Jersey: I know.

The postal clerk then turns around and tosses the box unceremoniously into the outbound box.

"The Internet?! Is that thing still around?"

I'll be sure to let y'all know when I receive it

and Start the Jersey’s journey through its original home. As far as which “sister” gets it next, I can mail it to them, Hand it off in Yuma if they are driving through en route to spring training. I’m also going to take a look at my schedule and see if maybe I can’t get to Peoria in the next week and hand it off to a “sister” there if need be.

A Yuma handoff could make for some great photos

Or even better, do the handoff at Dateland, over a date shake.

by Dex on Feb 21, 2012 7:57 PM PST up reply actions

I've been to Dateland countless times

and have never had a Date shake. So that would be fun. Would almost make up for the fact that unless I was continuing on to the valley, that going to Dateland would be so out of the way. The sacrifice for the sisterhood lol!

But I agree , a yuma handoff would be fun, pictures of the hand off under the sign that says “Ray Kroc Complex” followed by a picture of me with one tear down my cheek as i wave goodbye to the jersey as it leaves the parking lot …

So do you guys want to work out a hand off?

SDPads_1 are you going through Yuma or do you need it mailed?

The important thing is to keep me informed of its location.

heading to ST

8th – 11th of March. It would be my honor to bring it along

Emailed...

I’ll add that I’m happy to act as some kind of EuroPads coordinator if you like jbox? Makes sense to do it all in one go rather than everyone paying to mail it back and forth for days on end.

We could arrange a UK meet-up to hand-over and maybe watch a Sunday game together or something, and of course I’m heading to a town near SixPak in June so that would kinda bridge one potential gap too!

Anyway, let me know what you think!

A calendar is a good idea, it would be useful for a list of people who are happy to have it whenever and then fit them around those people with specific ideas for cool opportunities at designated times!

SPRING TRAINING

I am at a loss due to the lack of news about spring training. The season has started in Peoria and I was looking for some updates. This is about baseball and I am concerned about this years team, unless you concede last place already?

by AZBOMBERS on Feb 22, 2012 7:50 AM PST reply actions

You are always welcome to make a fan post

and contribute what you know from Spring Training. This particular thread is dedicated to a community project we are doing. Spring Training, and Baseball updates will come in due course, in their proper threads, but this Blog has never, nor will it ever be, a hard news blog. Lets face it— There have only been 2 days of bullpen sessions so far, so not exactly a lot of news to report. But, since you asked, All 38 Pitchers and Catchers reported on time, they were split into 2 groups, the first one threw monday, the second one on Tuesday. Early arrivals to ST include Headley, Alonso, Blanks, and Hudson among a few others I’m forgetting.

although twitter is a terrible tool for two way communication, it is great for news

I suggest the following
@padres
@followthepadres
@nctpadres
@peoriasportscom
@tomgarfinkel
@sharonheilbrunn

I consider gaslampball to be more of a fan community than a news blog

There's really nothing to report about spring training yet.

Pitchers and catchers have reported and are working out. A few position players have shown up early and are doing the same. The first game is the annual charity game against the HATED MARINERS on March 4th.

I sent my information.

I will be on my Honeymoon in Hawaii from June 12-19th. I can take pictures with it there! (Also my Bachelor Party will be partially at a Padres home game!)

I would be interested

Assuming I am still in Atlanta in the middle of August.

I would love to be able to wear the jersey to one of the games there… when it will be nice and hot and sweaty… oh yeah, that thing will reek to high heaven.

Zen Blade

I will be at a couple of the Atlanta games. We could do a handoff there. Wear it a game a piece or something.

I will fanpost at the end of my time with the Jersey, but in the mean time I will post about my activities on twitter using the #sisterhoodofthetravelingjersey hashtag.
