Enberg and Grant will remain broadcast partners this year, assuming MLB ratifies the Fox-Padres venture. But Enberg's contract, widely thought to expire after this season, also covers 2013 and 2014.

Can someone articulate the hate for Enberg

I mean he’s not the best broadcaster, that much is clear. But he’s far from the worst I’ve ever heard.

by athletics68 on Feb 20, 2012 3:01 PM PST reply actions

In an attempt to show he's not biased towards one team

He roots for whatever team the padres are playing and seems to be disappointed when the pads do something right for once.
Example: “OH MY! What a towering home run for the Reds veteran first baseman! Maybin didn’t even have a prayer of catching that! 16-3 Reds!”
10 minutes later: “Back to the warning path and it’s a…home run for san diego’s Yasmani Grandal. 16-4 Padres.”
We used to have a list but it looks like it was deleted from the glb wiki.

Also, when he heard fans complain about his "attempt to be neutral," he basically said:

“Good. Fcuk off, Fryer fans. What kind of a team names itself after a cooking appliance anyways???”

Nice to know he can spell...

Still there’s something to be said for a more neutral leaning broadcaster rather than the sniveling homers some teams have (like the Giants).

by athletics68 on Feb 20, 2012 8:10 PM PST up reply actions

That is true, I hate those two bozos.

I remember watching a Padres @ Giants game where the Friars were shellacking the Va-g-gs, and they stopped covering the game and instead focused on talking about this old guy who was one of “ball boys.”

Those two are a couple of classless assclowns.

Ehhhh, I don't deserve a signature...

by sdchicken on Feb 20, 2012 8:14 PM PST up reply actions   1 recs

I like homer broadcasts

I don’t watch sports to be neutral. If I watch the broadcast of another team, I just assume that they’re going to be more pleased when their team does well and potentially see calls their way as opposed to the opposition’s way.

by sdchicken on Feb 21, 2012 1:25 AM PST up reply actions   1 recs

Agreed

Kruk and Kuip are so homerish that the Giants can be losing by 10 runs and they’ll still find ways to belittle the other team, pump any little achievement by the Giants, or like chicken said outright ignore the game to watch the crowd. It’s completely unprofessional. Their radio broadcasters aren’t any better either.

Frankly I’d much rather have neutral or just slightly leaning toward the home team. Nothing wrong with recognizing a great play by the opposing team rather than making some crap excuse for a home team player not making it to first to stop the double play.

Personally, I think it's awesome when it gets obnoxious

One of the things I loved about Matty V was the fact that I could be almost positive that he was a Padres fan. The El Camino St. Louis Incident was just so awesome. And I think it would go a long way if Enberg “accidentally” forgot to hit the cough button while broadcasting at Chavez and said something like, “This plays just reeks of urine, doesn’t it?”

by Dex on Feb 21, 2012 9:45 AM PST up reply actions

Yeah, but that was Matty V. Who doesn't love that guy?

(Aside from , y’know, El Camino-loving, urine soaked, St. Louis fans?)

Right.

There is something to be said for a NEUTRAL broadcaster. But Dick often praises the other team while remaining passive about the Padres.

ALSO, he constantly misreads plays and mispronounces our own players’ names. And before someone jumps on my nuts, I’m not saying he has to be perfect and not make mistakes. But he makes far more mistakes than any other broadcaster I’ve heard.

by jodes0405 on Feb 20, 2012 8:27 PM PST up reply actions   2 recs

See that's not neutral then

He’s a visiting team bozo is his problem. Neutral or near neutral wouldn’t be pumping up the opposing team over the home team. Want to hear a good near neutral guy, listen to the old radio broadcasts of Bill King in Oakland. Outstanding broadcaster who gave both teams their dues (even if slightly leaning toward the home team where appropriate). Jerry seems to me to be another in that vein when he’s still on.

by athletics68 on Feb 21, 2012 8:58 AM PST up reply actions

Vin Scully is the best

obviously he loves the dodgers, but he always seems genuinely interested in the other team as well, and always finds something interesting and relevant to talk about during the game.

A pattern is emerging

Old guys leaned much more toward neutral (or neutral/home) than homer.

by athletics68 on Feb 21, 2012 12:46 PM PST up reply actions

The older guys

came from the “Don’t Be a Homer” School of broadcasting. Before Dick came to the Padres he was doing a lot of national work, so being neutral and finding excitement from either side of the game is what he knew.

I was originally looking forward to Enberg- A nationally recognized broadcaster on the Padres call seemed like a good Idea. And having heard some truly awful broadcasting, homerism or otherwise (Mark Grace with the D-Bags comes to mind) It was a weclome change. I get frustrated with Enbergs calls, but my beef with him isn’t on his lack of excitement for the Padres. I’ve heard him make some rather excited calls for San Diego. I think as Fans, his neutrality never matches our excitement , or disgust over the given situation.

My problem with Dick Enberg is his constant miscalls, the butchering of names of players, including our own, and especially Latin players. The same tired old stories, and the use of the term “Padres on Every Pillow”

by Dubsco on Feb 20, 2012 6:58 PM PST reply actions

Perhaps, but is that a because of Enberg?

Im pretty sure the Padres place in the standings will have the greatest affect on the broadcast. Anyone know of any studies to show how Enberg vs. any other broadcaster (Neely, perhaps since that would seem to have the lowest variation from other factors affecting ratings)
