Gaslamp Fantasy Ball is Live!
As promised, I have put together a Fantasy League for Gaslamp Ball on Yahoo! Sports. Currently, we're set for up to 16 teams, with the draft scheduled for Sunday March 25 at 3 pm pst/6 pm est. At this point, I am allowing entry on a first come, first served basis.
As of right now, we are using standard Yahoo rules with a Head-to-Head competition format. I encourage discussion in the comments if you feel there is something we can do better than the defaults. More, including League Name and Password, after the jump.
League Name: Gaslamp Fantasy Ball
Password: Tony The Gwynn
URL: http://baseball.fantasysports.yahoo.com/b1/15640
League ID: 15640
*****
And here is a breakdown of the rules as they stand now:
Format: Head-to-Head
Draft: Standard Snake Draft
Rosters: Yahoo Default
Waiver: Rotational, players are on waivers for 2 days.
Scoring Categories: Yahoo Default: Runs, RBI, Home Runs, Stolen Bases, Batting Average
Wins, Saves, Strikeouts, ERA, WHIP
Again, if you think we should go with something different, I encourage discussion. There's still plenty of time to make changes as needed.
Thank you again, everyone! I look forward to playing with you this year. See you on the OTs!

If there is a spot that needs to be filled
I would like to give it a try. Thing is I’ve never even played fantasy baseball before so I would probably not be very good it. I also don’t know how much work goes into joining a fantasy leagu. Do you have to set your lineup every day and stuff like that? Anyways if the league can’t be filled with hardened fantasy veterans I’d like to take a shot if you’ll have me.

Don't be nervous
I’m not sure there’s anyone here who would call themselves a fantasy ‘expert’.
Here’s all you need to know, really: You pick players all at once, which you use to form your team. Once you have your team, you’ll try and start the best players in such a way as to get the best possible numbers. You don’t have to set your lineup every day. If you don’t it will just duplicate the previous day. You can also add or drop players at any time.
It seems like a lot, but once you get into it, its pretty straight forward.
You can also set it days in advance to account for players with off days during the week.
Even if you don’t check every day, I would at least try to adjust for off days. That way you don’t end up with a bunch of guys sitting out that could get replaced by bench guys for those weekday day games.

Yes, I think the draft is too early. Closer to the end of spring training is ideal

I've never played this format before
but I’m looking forward to it.
I was dating this girl from Canada... after about a month I found out she didn't know what sport the Padres played, she thought "padre" was spelled p-o-d-r-a-y and she thought it was some kind of a fish. Dealbreaker.

The best strategy for fantasy baseball...
is to draft a kicker right off the bat.

I prefer
drafting a batter right off the kick.

Wow!
That filled up a lot faster than I expected.
I’ve opened up an additional 4 slots if anyone else wants to jump in.
Also, I think you’re right about the draft time. I’m updating that.

(although I’m not sure what the fourth slot would be)

You've probably just been filled by a lot of "no shows"
I recommend forcing players to check in at least once more a week before the draft. Anyone who doesn’t check in within 24-48 hours should be kicked.
And I would be stern about mandating participation in the draft…
The worst thing in these leagues is inactive players, and normally a bunch of random people signing up = many inactive players.
That being said, I might be interested if you have an open spot closer to the draft date, but can’t commit now. I would poll your participants if they want the default categories. I find those pretty boring, but those categories require far less time than a more comprehensive list of stats.
For the record, Whitney and I won the last Gaslampball Fantasy Baseball team (on CBSsports?).
I think you are correct
I added a rule to the league asking all participant to post at least once during the first 3 weeks of March, which should be enough time to eliminate any vacation excuses. Anyone that hasn’t done so will vacate their spot, which will probably open up a second round of sign-ups.
I may try to be a little more organized with the requests at that time.
You doubt my dedication to Gaslamp Ball Fantasy Footballbat League?!?!
I are ashamed of everyonesbody.
