Ballpark Experience

I know many of you here at GLB, including some frequent contributors to this blog, have had plenty to say about what music they would like to hear played at the stadium. I must admit, I never weighed in to much, as music was not really my specialty

Star-divide

Well That all is about to change as I get to do what I imagine many of you would love to do. Play the music at a stadium. No not Petco Park, but at the minor league Arizona Winter League , in Yuma, the former spring training home of the Padres. In addition to this, I will be working the scoreboard and doing public address announcements, batter introductions etc.

I've done all the other parts of this job at recreational leagues, and tournaments but I admit my inexperience with handling the music , and nervousness , as I would really like to do well and have this be a stepping stone to bigger opportunities.

So I'm asking you all here, if you got to choose the in between inning and post game music, what would you play?

"Mekong" by The Refreshments

Probably best suited for pregame batting practice. Plus the singer, Roger Clyne, is based in Arizona and has done post game concerts for the Dbacks so he might be familiar to the crowd. Check it out!

Are you doing music at the start of the game when everyone takes the field?

If so, a good song would be the intro music from the PRIDE FC events. As the song plays, you do the whole “Welcome to This Park! Taking the field, THE Arizona Somethings versus THE Yuma Whatnots!” Then, at 47 seconds into the song, that’s when you start doing your player intro stuff. It’s the perfect music for “At 1st base, #24, Thomas Whoever!”

If you need evidence on how to do that, study this video then. If you’re still not convinced, here’s proof on how that song can make anything awesome.

Now, you’ve got a starting song, you need a victory song. Well, there’s always the PRIDE FC victory song.

Use this music, Nate. Keep PRIDE alive. Educate the world.

And if anyone in the Padres Front Office is reading this, PLEASE use this music this season. At least for 1 game. Just…let it be one of the games I go to. Maybe Opening Day. Let me know in advance.

Why ask a failed romance to come watch your successful one? You know, that's like inviting the Seattle Mariners to a World Series game. It's just weird for everyone.

Pride FC has a good opening song...

But I have yet to hear this at a sporting event of any kind, and i think it would be awesome

Wow, this is good

It’s got a kind of hockey intro feel to it. Song starts as lights fade, then the drums kick in as the players take the ice. Though, it certainly would be awesome to hear it down at Petco.

I think i can make it work where I'm at too.

I’ve never heard of them before, but found some other stuff thanks to the suggestion, and could certainly put it to use!

THanks for the suggestions everyone!

Okay, you got enough suggestions for the FIRST game, what about the second?

Obviously, you’ll have to mix it up – you don’t want to get stale, like baseball did with
that “talkin’ baseball” song years ago. Leave it to the GLB crew to give you more
suggestions, but there’s one bit of music you have to keep in reserve, for when the
crowd gets unruly. Yes, Yuma fans can get unruly, I’ve seen it. Add beer and hot sun,
and things can get wild. For those times, you have to have something to stun the unruly
crowd back into ruly behavior. It’s kind of a nuclear option, so be very careful using it.
My suggestion is: “Ethel Merman Goes Disco”.

haha and for the record I had the first and second games each on friday

and my third game (second night) tonight. Theres a huge file of music provided by the league. One thing that I did not take into account, and which may alter the suggestions and route I take; the median age of the attendees is about oh, 75. Alot of “winter visitors”- We shall see how unruly they truly get. Never know about those canadians! Anyway, I’ve been tasked to stay with “older” music— How old? like 50s-70s. I have until wednesday to retool and be prepared (those are the next games)

and as a "red emergency button" you can use Trace Adkins "Swing, batter batter" song

I nominate "Crowd Chant" by Joe Satriani.

It’s pretty much exactly what it sounds like. And what it sounds like is a beefed-up, guitar-driven anthem in the style of “Zombie Nation”.

an Update on things semi-related

The leauge I am working for has all their teams play in Yuma at the Padres former ST complex for the Winter league. In the summer time, its the North American League, which last year employed Jose Canseco as the Yuma Scorpions player-manager, Gary Templeton as the Maui manager, and some may recall the broadcaster who went on a melt-down tirade about the team that wasn’t paying its bills up in Illinois- the team that was owned in part by Kevin Costner.

Well the league had a lot changes, including a new owner of the Yuma team, who has changed the name to the Yuma Panthers, and has hired former Padres SS Gary Templeton as its manager.

This is probably of note to no one here but me, but felt like sharing. My disappointment is in the new uniform and team name. When I get pics, I’ll try to show, but the Scorpions were unique and locally related and had a badass logo. Panthers—Too generic.

Nater, if you talk to the Panthers (ex Scorpions) owners

Tell them to change the logo… before they get sued out of existence by Penn State. That’s the most blatant copyright and trademark infringement I’ve seen.

Of all things...

That seems like the last thing you’d want to be associated with these days.

In related news, the team has unveiled its new on-field caps.

Did I not point this out in our other thread?

Yes..Yes I did. Its been talked about in the local media here. Not exactly starting off on the right foot trying to win the community over to the team when you come out and infringe on the copyright – and the copyright you infringe is that of a very tarnished institution. D’oh!

Update to whats going on

The pitching in this league is limited and shaky, so the guy who does the play by play had to pitch a couple of innings today. So guess who has two thumbs and got to do play by play today too? this guy!

It was a blast and I hope to do it again, but if anyone of you is actually interested, you can go to arizonawinterleague.com and check out the league. During games (11 and 2 AZ time, 10 and 1 CA time) you can listen and watch live to the ustream broadcast. I understand that my PA announcements can also be heard on the feed if anyone wants to hear the Tater in action. haha.
