Friend knives Cashner in right thumb.

News broke an hour ago that Andrew Cashner was injured in a hunting accident Tuesday. It did not involve a gun. Relax Bob Costas.

One of Cashner's hunting buddies was field dressing the meat, slipped and stabbed Cashner who presumably holding the animal carcass.

The puncture wound resulted in 2 stitches and a lacerated tendon in the right thumb. Cashner, a right handed pitcher, underwent surgery for the injury and is expected be out of commission for the next 3 months. According to Darren Smith's interview with Corey Brock (MP3), "he's very, very likely to start the season on the Disabled List".

Padres GM Josh Byrnes told the media that they've been "slightly busier" this afternoon at the Winter Meetings.

Cashner was acquired in a trade with the Cubs for Anthony Rizzo last winter with the hopes of turning him into a starter. Cashner promptly strained a lat after making a few starts. Rizzo is reportedly in good health.
