Can the san diego padres be a sleeper and win the nl west in the 2012 season? - Yahoo! Answers
There seems to be a consensus on the internet that the Padres don't have a chance.

Apparently
The Padres gave up all their players and got nothing in return, so of course they don’t have a chance.

Do you imagine a scenario where we could, say, sell Hudson to a Japanese team?

Just were we want to be.
"Over? Did you say "over"? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!"
Good. If people believed in our team, we'd have nothing to ruin.
No pants. No problem.

General “Buck”: Well, uh, Sir? Ah, i-if the pilot’s good, see – I mean – i mean if he’s really….sharp, he can barrel that baby in so low, I – hehe! You oughtta see it sometime, it’s a sight ya – a BIG plane like a 52 – VROOM! Ha! Just jet exhaust, fryin’ chickens in a barnyard! Hahaha!" President: “Yeah, but HAS HE GOT A CHANCE?” General “Buck”: “Has he GOT A CHANCE? Haha! Hell, yeah……yea…….ye……..”

I don't realistically see them winning the west
but wouldn’t be surprised if they come in a close 3rd, maybe 7-10 games back. Somewhere around 85 wins would be good.
I usually reserve Yahoo Answers for when I want to be reminded of the stupidity of my fellow man/woman.

I don't think last place...
With so much off season movement, I don’t think anyone can accurately predict the outcome. I feel like the Pads have improved in some much needed areas, settled some dust with regard to which players are favorites for certain jobs, and have a decent pitching staff.
Losing Bell, Adams, Latos will only look terrible if the likes of Alonso and Quentin don’t provide the much needed run support. Even average pitchers are significantly improved at Petco.
"average pitchers are improved at Petco"
So are the opponent’s average pitchers. The Padres’ average pitchers who are improved at Petco still have to give up fewer runs than the opponents’. Let’s hope Alonso and Quentin can give that added run support.
So they're saying we have a chance?

Absolutely, if you read between the lines.
Just look at the Harry Zona team. They went from 65 wins in 2010 to 95 wins last year.
How many of those yahooers picked ’em last April?
How many picked the Padres to win 90 games in April of 2010?
After those two recent years, a smart yahooer would know better.
The smart yahooers didn’t bother to answer the question.

Gee, awfully negative.
I’m not a big believer that the Padres will compete in 2012, but those comments are (predictably) pretty harsh. I mean, we did pick up four solid pieces in the Latos deal, replaced Bell with Street, acquired Quentin, and the Adams trade was last year (and a really good one, anyway). Haven’t been a fan of all the moves, but it’s hard to say the Padres haven’t at least attempted to improve in 2012.
That said, I probably shouldn’t take Padres ‘analysis’ on yahoo answers too seriously.
Yeah, you summed up pretty much what I think.
I’d bet very few, if any, of the people who commented on Yahoo have paid any attention at all to the Padres. The ones that reference losing Bell, Adams, and Latos probably only knew it from seeing it in a scroll on ESPN saying “key losses” -no that’s not possible that would mean ESPN pays attention to the Padres.

Yeah, exactly.
I guess I can’t quite comprehend the idea of commenting on a team’s offseason without having a clue about what went on in that offseason.
And, again, this is coming from someone not entirely on board with the offseason’s moves. Leave it to yahoo answers to make me turn on my own opinions!

The yahoo commenters must read Bleacher Reort.
I just finished reading one of Bleacher’s “featured” columnists ranking of the 30 MLB rotations. The guy ranked the Padres rotation 23rd, after we traded the only starter he ever heard of. His key “judgement”:
“They’re not bad, not by any means, but they all have either unexciting stuff or miserable command.”
Betcha he never saw any of them pitch. He also didn’t look at any scouting reports or check stats for last year’s third best rotation in the NL.
