Padres President will donate dollar for every new follower this year in fight against cancer

Padres President/COO Tom Garfinkel is pledging one dollar for every new twitter follower that he gets this year. He started at 900 followers on January 1st and currently has 1,041. That's $141 being donated to Stand Up 2 Cancer.

I will donate $1 for every new follower between today and Jan 1 2013 to @SU2C to fight cancer. Wishing you all a healthy and peaceful 2012.
Jan 01 via Twitter for iPhoneFavoriteRetweetReply

Garfinkel has been accused of hating: the color brown, the Friar and even lunch and dinner. Say what you will about those things, but this is definitive proof that the dude really LOATHES cancer.

I'm assuming you all follow him already, you should, but tell your friends and retweet.

This is a dangerous game he's playing. If he gets too many followers, like a MILLION we may need to start a campaign to unfollow him so we don't put him and his family in the poor house, but let's worry about that later. First things first.

What if he hits a million?

I’m nervous for him. What if his wife wanted to redo the kitchen? What if his kids wanted to go to college?

This reminds me of that episode of the office where he promises to pay for the tuitions of that entire class of high school kids and then they bring him back 4 years later and he’s still a middle-manager. What if Tom thinks the TV deal is richer than it is?

Forget College

or redoing the kitchen. What if he wanted to put food on the table! I personally would recomend putting a max limit on the amount he will donate

I like that the person named "imstillhungry" is worried about Garfinkel putting food on the table

Way to commit to the name!

Why ask a failed romance to come watch your successful one? You know, that's like inviting the Seattle Mariners to a World Series game. It's just weird for everyone.

I'll follow him December 31, 2012

and unfollow him January 3, 2013

That way I don’t have to listen to him try to justify a payroll that is lower today than it was ten years ago.

Really?

2000 payroll: $54.9
2010 payroll: $37.8
2011 payroll: $45.8

I followed him for a while, but I got tired of his excuses.

deflation is a bitch.

Just ask Japan. Maybe that is what is going on, all the padres money is in Yen.

If you turn off retweets

you really won’t get much baseball information at all.

by kevintheoman on Jan 4, 2012 10:20 AM PST up reply actions

My point exactly.

And during the season, a lot of his tweets are ballpark related: Free tickets/upgrades, handling fan complaints, et cetera. I was really impressed when I asked about getting local beer in the Hall of Fame Bar & Grill next season (this was mid-September) and he said they’d try to do it by the next game.

There’s certainly plenty to complain about when it comes to the on-field product, but Mentor has done a great job making the ballpark experience better.

This is an honest question

and may show my ignorance, but does Garfinkel really even have much or anything to do with the Padres on-field product or payroll? It really does seem that the budget is set by Moorad, and is entirely within Byrnes purview what to do with it.

I really don't think so.

As COO, I think his job is mostly ballpark operations. Maybe he’s in charge of sales and marketing, too?

by Darklighter on Jan 4, 2012 10:57 AM PST up reply actions

I think it's mostly sales and marketing

But whenever we have conversations with him it sounds like there’s a lot of discussion about baseball ops stuff though it’s not his direct responsibility. Like he has input and sees the reports and stuff.

by Dex on Jan 4, 2012 11:09 AM PST up reply actions

that would make sense

would certainly make the product easier to sell if you are at least included on what the lastest developments in the product are.

I didn't like following Canepa

or the Twitter accounts of the Chargers FO either. Tim Sullivan I enjoy following though.

so you admit you are being close minded

to viewpoints different than what you may have already formed, and unopen to weighing evidence he may or may not present on twitter? DO you not want to hear the justifications because you dismiss out of hand the source of the information or that it does not align with the opinions that you have already formed and therefore automatically declare it invalid?
