Curious to see how Rymer does in LE and Jaff Decker does in Tucson

Rymer has been up to LE twice (I think) and failed pretty bad. He won MWL MVP last year so let’s hope he rolls through high A, hopefully keeping the steals high, we know our Padres love some SBs.

Also, I think Jaff is going to put up MONSTER numbers for Tucson, it’ll be hard to not get excited like we did for Rizzo. I think he may end up in the top 5-8 Padres prospects next year, maybe earning a Sep call up.

Lastly, can’t wait to see how Ross and Hedges do. Wonder if they’ll both start in Ft Wayne? Maybe Hedges, not Ross? I think Spangenberg is going to move through the system fairly quickly.

Who’s saying we don’t talk about prospects? Prospects, prospects, prospects.

This is going to be a big year for the organization.

Ross, Hedges, Liriano, Spangenberg, if all these guys keep progressing and excelling we’ll be in good shape. But there’s at least a decent chance some or most of these guys may not pan out. If Kelly and Decker don’t start producing better statistically, it’s going to be time to start reducing expectations. We’re set to compete for the next 5 or 6 years. If the younger guys keep advancing then we’ll be able to sustain success. If they flame out we’ll be looking at another rebuild in 2017 or so. But I digress….

i can't decide if they aren't optimistic enough about erlin and weiland

or i’m not optimistic enough about grandal, hedges, and liriano.

i love rymer’s potential but he is extremely raw and has a long way to go. I can see both hedges and grandal developing into above average catchers if not borderline allstars (i think ausmus is a good comp for hedges and grandal’s ceiling could probably be between jason varitek and javy lopez if things break right for him), but i think Erlin and Weiland are not only on equal footing in terms of potential value, but more “sure things” as well as closer to big league production.

I sort of felt the same way

I think I am more optimistic about them two than the others, especially Kelly.

I'm a bit disappointed with the

“Kelly has a ceiling of a #3 starter”… Five #3 starters don’t win world series-es.

Also, our starting rotation is looking scary bad (in a bad way) this year… Losing Latos really knocks it down (on paper). LOTS of question marks, everyone but Stauffer has a huge question mark next to their name.
Here’s hoping that our SPs and our prospects live up to or surpass their potential.

the thing is

if richard, moze, or volquez are injured or ineffective, Bass or Cashner could step in and be at least average with tons of potential upside, and this is at the beginning of the season.

luebke is going to pitch great from the get-go, but may wear down as the season wears on. I think Erlin and Weiland are good bets to be ML ready by midseason. Kelly I think would be more a september guy.

i see your concern when it comes to moseley and richard though. I’m not totally convinced clay will be 100% by spring training. if he’s not then i wouldn’t trip about Bass beginning the season in the rotation, but i don’t like that it basically leaves Cashner as your next option if someone goes down. Ideally you want Cashner to spend the majority of the season in the bullpen so the staff has a chance to really work with him and refine his game, also you don’t want to have to bring up Erlin, Weiland or Kelly too soon if that happens.

that’s why i like cory brock’s idea of bringing in a vet on a minor league deal to stash in AAA as an insurance policy. heck, maybe even sign a guy like Chris Young, Scott Kazmir, or Rich Harden and let them work out of the bullpen. That way you get short term insurance and production for a pitching staff that’s short on veteran leadership. I like the idea of CY competing for a 5th spot or bullpen slot because the players and coaching staff love him and when he’s healthy he can still really pitch.

The rotation will be a little weak to start this season. I don't think there's any way around that.

People are calling Kelly a #3 because he hasn’t put it all together yet. But he’s only been a full time pitcher for about 2 1/2 seasons and he’s still developing. He could really use a full season of AAA to refine his stuff. If everything breaks right he could be a strong #2, we’ll wait and see. I’d definitely put Joe Weiland and Robbie Erlin ahead of him. At worst, those two should be like Stauffer, great at home, hittable on the road.

Joe Ross and Keyvius Sampson might have Ace potential, but they’re a ways off. Our next best chance to land an Ace pitcher will come when Jedd Gyorko is ready to take 3rd base and we trade Chase Headley, probably in the 2012 off season or mid 2013 at the latest.

Reading this I get the feeling that the Padres

have tons of depth, and some guys with real upside, but no sure thing/stud type star. Is that right? Or is Alonso that kind of player?

You're right

I don’t think we have any A grade players yet we have a lot of B players and even more C players (C players are actually very good). Our depth is ridiculous, but we lack that big name prospect.

As it stands now, we probably have the best (or at least top 3) farm system in all of baseball based on our depth. I’m sure some will pan out and some will fail.

It will be nice if we are able to accumulate big league depth like the Reds did and flip that in to a young controllable player like they did with Latos.

we don't have the mike trout or bryce harper stud

but sickels ranked 9 guys in our top 10 as at least borderline B+ types.

Liriano could be phenomenal, but it's too soon to say.

Alonso, Grandal and perhaps Gyorko are very highly regarded around baseball. But, yes, the strength of the system is depth. The impact type talent is going to have to come through trades of veteran players. Given the system depth, we’re in a good position to do that.

Thanks for the feedback. I like reading about the farm, but still trying to get a handle on the gradings.

Farm is good but not

great! We def have some promsing prospects and a deep system but where is the futre star A grade prospect. I thought was Rizzo but after Sept i thought a lil different. Could be Alonzo now but i would grade with at a B+.We are missing an potential ace for are rotation, could it be Kelly, I am not too sure.
