Hi _ this is Jed Hoyer from the Padres and I’d like to offer you the job as our hitting coach.
Well gee I like San Diego, I haven’t had a real job in the majors in forever, my career is already down the tubes. Sure, I’ll be your hitting coach for a year and be the lightning rod of blame for a team with a lower payroll then Pawtucket. And all I ask for is a steady paycheck, some of that sweet San Diego sun and breakfast and a parking spot

Gee, Jed… I don’t know. I’ve got a guy on the other line about a set of white-walls. Can I call you back?
Better than being called up and offered the job of Padres punching bag
Especially with how frustrated the batters tend to get not hitting the ball in Petco n all that.
queen of the rec fairies
although it broke our hearts it did not break our will the herd
Being the punching bag isn't so bad,
no one makes solid contact.

I'm glad I was sitting down when I read the news
Otherwise, I might have fainted from the shock of the Padres firing their hitting coach. ‘Cos I haven’t gotten used to it after the previous 25 times.
25 years as a baseball fan and I'm still confused by the infield fly rule
Only one way to fix the hitting coach problem
Hire Tony Gwynn.
Not only is he the best pure hitter alive, he’s Mr Padre and would never be fired. Yougn’s would listen to his every word and veterans would respect him as well. Tony would teach them how to use Petco to their advantage and help the overall hitting on the club.
Obviously I don’t think this will really happen but it makes sense to some degree.
Mat Latos is the real deal...Go Lakers, Pads, and Bolts

if 1% of tony the gwynn's hitting skills translated to coaching
anthony would have been a .300 hitter

Loretta needs to leave the front office
And teach these kids how to hit at Petco, he has to still have the best career batting average here.
Padres Fan.
Shocker?
Ready coached the team to a .237 AVG and got fired. Second worst in MLB and the Worst in NL.
Blanks never learned how to hit a curve ball, Bartlett had his worst year at the plate since becoming an everyday player, Hudson had his worst year at the plate—like ever, he never got Venable going, (although I doubt anyone can) and Ludwick still has scary dreams about the 396 sign in center field. Headley and Hundley were two bright spots but neither one could break .290 let alone .300. Perhaps everyone is right and and it’s not his fault, maybe he was dealt too crappy of a hand and he made the best of a sh*tty situation but I’m not shocked he got fired today, I’m sorta shocked he kept his job this long to be honest.
Word on the street is that Phil Plantier is going to get the job or at least get offered the job. What is weird is that both Plantier and Ready were acquired by the Padres as players, left the team, and came back a second time only to leave again and finish their careers with other teams. Does this have some sort of deeper meaning? Should we keep hiring journey men to be our hitting coach? Should we hire someone who spent their entire career with one team? Maybe someone who won a bunch of batting titles? Someone who is sometimes described as the best hitter since Ted Williams? Or should we hire Plantier, fire him in two months and hire Bip Roberts?
Forget the brown...Bring back Hudson & Bauer!
good point
why hire marginal hitters as hitting coaches?
Mark McGuire as a hitting coach makes sense. TG makes sense. The Padres last 5 hitting coaches do not.
Ready was hired as a hitting coach because he was a successful manager in the Padres farm system – turning out decent hitters. Ready was well respected and was touted as a future big league manager – not a hitting coach. This was handle poorly and as a result, the Padres lost future managerial talent. Actually, when you think about it – probably the best thing that ever happened to him.
On the other hand, you have different fingers.
Ready was a great Manager.
But you are not fair to other guys:
Wally Joyner had a career: .289 / .362 / .440
Dave Magadan: .288 / .390 / .377
Mark Maguire: .263 / .394 / .588
I appreciate that Mark could hit homers, but a career .263?
I would rather have Wally or Dave as a hitting coach any day. They were both treated poorly.
Padres Fan.
you are right
after writing that comment
I looked up their BA’s and was pleasantly surprised
On the other hand, you have different fingers.
Wally Joyner had a successful career and hit pretty well. Magadan was a good hitter as well.
There will always be someone to take this job. There are only 30 of these jobs in the world, or whatever how many MLB teams there is. TG would never be hired unless Jed thinks his own job is in jeopardy. If the team hit .237 and you can’t really fire TG then what the hell do you do? Jed would be hated if he canned TG in the neighborhood of how Jerry Jones was hated for firing Landry.
If I pick it, I flick it

I checked in on Ludwick yesterday
He only marginally improved his average at the Pirates, by .006. Had a good start but then tailed off.
Not sure who would be best as a hitting coach, and TG Jr was hitting better at the Dodgers than he did here.
Couldn’t we fire Norv Turner instead? If he starts every series off with a run up the middle for no gain again this week, I will scream.
He had to go.
Blanks struggled mightily and with no apparent change to his swing, same with Rizzo. You need someone that not only knows how to hit major league pitching, but is aware of how changing mechanics affect the swing. How else can you suggest changes and fix a broken swing?
