Towers for GM of the Year
The improved team has a persona that's grittier, a lineup that's less strikeout prone and bullpen that's deeper and better. Towers doesn't want to accept any plaudits, declining through a team spokesman to comment for a story to praise him because he figures it's a team effort. But Hall said flat out about Towers, "He is the architect of an extremely competitive team that has resulted in arguably the most impressive and unthinkable turnaround in our game this season.''

i'm of two minds on this
his pitching acquisitions were very smart, but his predecessors were excellent at doing everything KT stinks at: developing young talent.
based on their excellent drafts and young player development. the wave of talent that included justin upton, chris young, steven drew, miguel montero, gerardo parra, etc. was known to be one of the strongest young cores in recent memory. heck, even their front-line starters were there before KT got there.
he did a great job adding roleplayers (err… sort of… half of them didn’t work out) and piecing together a bullpen, but honestly is that GM of the year material?? at the risk of sounding like a broken record i think you give it to the Rays’ front office or perhaps the Braves.
but these awards are typically “last year bad, this year good” type deals (bud black’s MOtY anyone?)

thank God
I thought I was the only person in the world that didn’t think Black deserved manager of the year. The way I see it, if Black wasn’t manager the padres would have gotten into the playoffs in 2007 and 2010.
