2B Orlando Hudson's RBI single in the sixth inning of the Padres' 8-3 loss at San Francisco on Monday night ended the third-longest hitless streak in Padres history. Hudson had gone 0-for-34 dating to a home run against the Dodgers' Hiroki Kuroda on Aug. 30. Shortstop Tommy Dean went hitless in 42 straight at-bats from July 6, 1970 to May 4, 1971. Infielder Phil Stephenson had a 35 at-bat hitless streak from July 26 to Oct. 2, 1992.

even with the slump

he’s generated more WAR than eckstein did in ’08 and ’09 combined

I think he has been a big disappointment

Eckstein 2009 : .260/.323/334 …..OPS+ 82……..WAR 0
Eckstein 2010: 267/321/326……..OPS+ 83……..WAR 1.2
Hudson 2011: 237/323/339……..OPS+ 89……..WAR 0.5

he’s generated more WAR than eckstein did in ’08 and ’09 combined

Eckstein wasn’t on the team in 2008. Here are his WAR numbers regardless.
2008 Toronto 1.1
2008 Arizona -0.1

depends what your expectations were

granted his current slump has dragged his numbers down considerably but for most of the season he’s hit around .250-.260, played good defense and walked at a pretty decent clip. when jed brought him in, he and bartlett came as a couple of guys who were going to lend stability to the middle infield for the next two seasons, not anchor the lineup.

Anchor the lineup?

I don’t see anyone here suggesting that was the expectation for Bartlett and Hudson.

The key words I remember from March are significant upgrades. In that regard, I would say they have both been disappointments. Improvement at those two positions has been marginal at best.

padres middle infielders from the last 3 seasons:

edgar gonzalez, luis rodriguez, david eckstein, zombie everth cabrera, jerry hairston jr.

none of them could hit or field as well as hudson or bartlett. i’d say that constitutes a significant upgrade.

For sure.

He was never going to be an offensive juggernaut at this stage of his career, but even w/the streak his production has been adequate. His defense is still relatively solid too and he’s a good veteran presence around the younger guys.

You left out Tejada

Gee, I wonder why?

Bartlett is certainly a big improvement over Cabrera. But compared to 2010’s Tejada and Hairston??? Not so much.

because this season he gave us more value

by playing on the giants and generating negative WAR.

also the word “middle infielder” has always been kind of a stretch for miggy

and in re bartlett and jairston

hairston 2011 WAR is at .6 vs. lolwut at 1.9. lolwut is a little more expensive but he profiles as much more of an everyday player than jerry did.

I am genuinly surprised to not see scott hairston on this list

But maybe it just seemed like he went 2 months without a hit last season. I don’t remember. But it felt like forever.
Either way, yay for another year with the o-dog…
