Well the trade deadline has come and gone. I personally liked the moves. I would have liked to see Qualls moved, but then, I doubt it would have been for much more than Ludwick moved for, which is to say, nothing.
It is wildly annoying to see the general Padres populace whine and b*tch about the trades. They are good solid trades that make the team better. I think everyone wants to see this craptastic season end. I feel like its been a combination of questionable clubhouse chemistry, bad luck, and bad health that has stopped us from having a more respectable season.
There are some people who get how baseball works, and some people are will scream in righteous indignation no matter what we did. (See foulweather fans)
I trust the Hoyer team quite a bit. They know what they are doing. We have some very decent young guys coming up, and we are not as far from competing as people would like to think.
So here are my moves I think the front office can do to calm some of the hysteria, and let us know they are planning to win sooner than later.
1) Offer Heater a 2 year 16 mil contract with a 9 mil Club option for a 3rd year.
2) Sign Cam Maybin to a 5 year deal to buy out his arbitration years and a FA year. I truly believe having a high defense reliable CF is vital to club success.
3) Lock up Stauffer on a 3 year deal to avoid arbitration and a FA year.
I think spending some future money right now would send a sign to fans that they plan on locking down the pieces that work, and committed to finding the appropriate other pieces of the puzzle internally, even if it means starting some "Service Time" clocks early. Moving Ludwick helps us in this process so we can start testing some other people in these roles NOW in a lost season. In 2009, thats exactly what we did, and we were able to lay the ground work for 2010.
The Padres will always ride the line of success based on how they fill holes in the off season. Our FA's this last year were mostly failures, but some bright spots (see Maybin) were the ones you REALLY want to hit on (young controllable talent).
I think we can be good next year if we can get some of our young guys playing time and see who works well, both on a chemistry and on a performance level with the club. If that happens, I can see the end of this year, and 2012 being very special.
