Padres lose no-hitter and game in the 9th

The Padres had a combined no-hitter going for 8 2/3 innings.  Aaron Harang threw 6 of those.  Josh Spence, Chad Qualls and Mike Adams continued the pitching dominance.  Luke Gregerson and his mustache gave up two hits in the 9th that put an end to the game and the bid for the first no-hitter in Padres history.

The Padres hitters looked absolutely terrible, they only had one hit  (Cameron Maybin in the 5th) and were shut out again for the second day in a row.

It was a really strange game, the dichotomy of watching no hit baseball by the pitchers in one half of the inning and the Padres hitters sh_tting themselves in the other.  You didn't know if you should be proud or disgusted.  It was like an open faced sandwich with really delicious fresh baked bread but it's covered in dog poo.

I think it's time the Padres start looking towards the future and bring up Anthony Rizzo.

Maybe we'll score tomorrow.  Let's hope.  Go Padres.

If the Padres don't score tomorrow

We’ll go a whole week without seeing them score a single run.

they'll win 12-1

the 1 will be a Tony Gwynn Jr. 12-hopper through a drawn-in infield for an inside-the-park-homer

Now the Padres will rise from the ashes like the Phoenix

And the ASG is where this season? Huh? Huh???

Why ask a failed romance to come watch your successful one? You know, that's like inviting the Seattle Mariners to a World Series game. It's just weird for everyone.

Wow, what an excruciatingly painful week this has turned out to be for Padres fans

Two shutouts and the hands of the most dysfunctional team in baseball. At what point will Jed just pack it in and start the sale?

And in regards to abara in the game thread

When we win, it’s in CAPS. But, it’s all in the eye of the beholder as to how one takes the phrase. At least until the opposite is true,

A couple of days ago the Red Sox hit 6 HRs

The Padres have hit 6 HRs in the past 15 games, never more than one in a single game. In answer to A68’s question, I think the answer is the day after the All Star break. In answer to Jbox’s pondering: disgusted.

by EvilSammy on Jul 9, 2011 4:20 PM PDT reply actions

That's what I figured as well

Jed will spend the ASG break wheeling and dealing Bell, Ludwick and anything else of any value. Not that was have much to sell. Today’s loss was just a swift kick in the nuts while you’re already down…

And to think I have to endure taking my friend who is a Giants fan to the game next Saturday. I’m definitely going to have to drink heavily during that game just to get through it.

If tony gwynn jr got his bunt down...

They could have scored on a sac fly. Dodgers would have never batted in the 9th. We could have got a no hitter and lost. I think that might have been more depressing. Not sure.

Losing the game and no-hitter in extra innings would have bothered me the most

So...

Who goes? I’m not being foulweather, I just want to be prepared. Bell, Ludwick, Harang… anybody else?

by 5fingerGreenehandpunch on Jul 9, 2011 5:30 PM PDT via mobile reply actions

Bell, Ludwick, and Qualls would be my bets

I think Harang will stick around just because he’s still revitalizing his career here.

by athletics68 on Jul 9, 2011 5:39 PM PDT up reply actions

it's doesn't matter what Harang wants...

He is one of the most marketable players we have for a team that is in contention.
Qualls is definitely gone, because he costs 6 mil to keep for another year. Bell, Luddy and Hawpe are also on my list.

On the other hand, you have different fingers.

by Hormel on Jul 9, 2011 5:56 PM PDT up reply actions

Please include Hudson. If it were easy, he'd be doing it.

Bartlett can be traded in the offseason, but Hoffpauir or Tolleson in Tucson would be better than Hudson at the plate. He’s nothing but a .230 singles hitter now. At this point, Jed has to have decided on a housecleaning. Just bring up the kids already. Maybe they’ll be aggressive and swing at hittable pitches early in the count.

by wegotballsley on Jul 9, 2011 6:22 PM PDT up reply actions

Hudson signed for two years

Which means you’d have to convince the team acquiring him that they want to commit to him for that long. If the Padres, a bottom of the league team, don’t want him then why would one of the buyers want him?

Same goes for Bartlett.

Hawpe will also be a tough sell.

We’d probably have to get him some consistent post injury at bats to move him.

If Harang is a Padre at the end of season

The they have to either agree to a $5M mutual option for 2012 or pay him $500K to get lost. $500K may not seem like much in comparison to the other MLB money that gets thrown around, but I think it’s enough to be an incentive to trade him away.

And to think

we nearly swept the Giants just a few days ago. I hate losing 1-run games, we’re supposed to win those.

by Rich Garcia's defective eyes on Jul 9, 2011 9:10 PM PDT reply actions

Well one was a 14-inning walk-off,

and in the other we threatened to tie in the ninth. They were both one-run games. When he says we nearly swept them, I think he means that we were fairly close to winning the other two.

I was at the game last night and didn't think it could get much worse...

I stand corrected. I really have no idea what to expect for the rest of the season, but we’ve definitely hit rock bottom.

TBD

Here's my overly hopeful/optimistic outcome of the day:

It’s impossible to get worse than this. No, don’t tell me some b______t about “The Padres can make it worse because they suck so bad.” Just no. Tomorrow will be our redemption. WE. WILL. NOT. BE. SWEPT.
