Around SBN: Devils Beat Rangers, Head To Stanley Cup Finals

Padres lose 0-1. Fail to score with bases loaded in 9th with no outs.

Mat Latos was cruising until the 8th inning when he gave up 3 straight hits and a run.  Then Bud Black decides to go to the bullpen.

The offense was cruising too going  0-11 with runners in scoring position. They had base runners galore but could not move them.

The Dodgers tried their best to give the game away with 2 hit batsmen in the 9th.  The bases were loaded with no outs but they were prudish and refused to score, striking out twice and flying out to end the game.

This game was like Novocaine,  I'm numb and slightly indifferent.  Hopefully it'll wear off by tomorrow.

Did not watch a minute of tonight's game

but judging from the reactions on the Game Threads, it’s a good thing I didn’t.

Kyle Phillips and Will Venable

look in the mirror and figure out where your manhood is. Jeez, you could have pinch hitted a pitcher and at least they could have put the bat on the ball. Bring up Spangenberg, Gyorko and Darnell, maybe they can actually make contact. This after Headley with his fail with runner on third and 1 out inability to do anything but K versus Brian Wilson. From now on the squeeze bunt plays need to be on every runner on third less than 2 outs.

Thoughts? "I have none. If there are any other developments, we will let you know." Charger GM - AJ Smith.

How long til we get Mike Baxter back?

Why ask a failed romance to come watch your successful one? You know, that's like inviting the Seattle Mariners to a World Series game. It's just weird for everyone.

Latos should get to slap

those guys in the face. Dodgers, as usual, try to give the game away with two hits batsmen and Padres too incompetent to even tie let alone try to win the game. Let the Heath Bell and Ryan Ludwick fire sale begin. This team is completely gutless.

Just got home from the game

TOUGH game. Was a blast through 7. Had awesome seats (field level, behind the plate), Latos (my favorite Padre) was cruising and the W was in sight. It seemed like every ball hit was a weak grounder back to Latos, he was consistently hitting 95 and 96 on the gun and it looked like the sky was the limit, no stopping Latos. I honestly wasn’t even thinking about the offense sucking.

Then Bud left Latos in for one batter too long and it all came crashing down. He wasn’t throwing 95 anymore, down to 92 that last batter, he was clearly tired. Oh well.

Our offense sucking in the 9th was a disappointment but not a shock. For some reason I was expecting the worst which became reality. Some Padres fan dressed in throwback garb walked by me after the game and just shook his head saying we sucked, can’t disagree. Not getting the runner in from third is becoming too much of a trend, that needs to stop.

Tonight’s game reminded me of another Padres game I went to at Dodger stadium a few years ago. Peavy was pitching and absolutely cruising. Score was 0-0 going into the 9th and then that relief pitcher from the Mets we had (forget his name, think he had the goggles) walked in the losing run, it was awful, just like tonight.

Hopefully we get the W tomorrow.

Were you the guy with long hair and a crown?

Heading up to LA tomorrow. EARLY. Wish us luck.

We plan on bringing back a win…

Please bring back a W, have a good drive, shouldn't be bad on a Saturday morning

You talking about the guy in the Celtics jersey? They put him on the jumbotron and everyone started booing.

Hopefully you get a little Padres offense tomorrow.

I watched a depressing movie...

then my brother texted me with the score and I looked it up. Suddenly the depressing flick seemed like an uplifting comedy.

9th Inning...

I saw Denorfia get called back from the on deck circle…WTF, he is one of the few players who seems capable of clutching up. Why not have him hit for Venable? Take one cut and then attempt a safety squeeze….something other than ANOTHER punchout!!!

by ignodan on Jul 9, 2011 2:28 AM PDT reply actions

Agreed

I still don’t get the Venable love over Denorfia when Deno has now proven himself to be the better player.

by athletics68 on Jul 9, 2011 7:39 AM PDT up reply actions

I think the love for Venable

has to do with long term potential. Unfortunately as time passes, Venable isn’t reaching that potential while Deno is consistently better.

I would have like to see Deno hit in that situation.

So would I

On ESPN's front page the headline reads:

“Fired Garvey: I am and always will be a Dodger”

Can we please destroy the Dodgers today and un-retire Garvey’s number?

AGREED
“If management doesn’t want me to be an employee, I can respect that,” Garvey said. “But no one can take away the fact that I am and always will be a Dodger.”

Seriously, TAKE DOWN THE 6!!

Should have never been retired by the Padres in the first place.

I blame myself

For allowing myself hope in the 9th – bases loaded, no outs, of course we’ll score.

Get rid of Venafail, please.

Plus I said to my wife they should have taken Mat out at the beginning of the 8th – we’ve got a great bullpen, lets use it (except Frieri).

It takes skillz

If you get a ball almost anywhere you score a run.

Anyone who spikes a ball after tagging out a douche like Andres Torres is OK by me.
