Padres Trade Deadline Open Thread
Less that an hour and a half before the trade deadline and we have no idea what is even going on right now. Is it Adams? Is it Bell? Is it Adams and Bell? Where is Ryan Ludwick hiding? There are many things going on with the minutes ticking away very quickly. Here's a thread to send your well wishes to whoever gets sent away to where ever they are being sent. Good luck to all of them.

Looks like it's Mike Adams going to Texas
Does this move Frieri to the set-up role?
Why ask a failed romance to come watch your successful one? You know, that's like inviting the Seattle Mariners to a World Series game. It's just weird for everyone.
Good god I hope not
Frieri last year, I would be OK with it. Frieri this year is a bust. Sophmore slump or true read on him? I am guessing true read. He caught lightning in a bottle last year.
He's a reliever. They're volatile.
Odds are he’ll be fine.

Good call on the open thread.
Sad to see Adams go. I hear we got the two pitchers we wanted. I wonder how close they are? Losing Adams feels like a white flag for 2012 unless these guys can have an impact soon.
Yea
How old are they? What level? I think Erlin is better/younger, but not sure.

Erlin is a stud and consensus top 40 prospect
Wieland has phenomenal numbers, but doesn’t seem to get a lot of prospect hype, at least on pre-season lists.
Both guys are in in AA. Wieland is 21 now, and Erlin will be 21 in October. Looks like both guys were drafted out of high school. Erlin in 09 and Wieland in 08.
Both are having very strong seasons. Assuming they stay in AA in our Org. that San Antonio team is going to be crazy good.

This is Wieland's breakout year.
He’ll be highly rated going into 2012.

Love, love, love this deal!
Both guys get unfairly overlooked in teh prospect community b/c they “only” have average velo.
Don’t know a ton about Wieland besides the fact that he pounds the zone, but Erlin is the real deal.
His command, secondary stuff (curve and change), pitchability, and poise are off the charts. All these traits actually remind me of Haren (obvi, Haren is much taller and is a righty, but their non-superficial qualities are extremely similar).
Erlin’s one weakness has been being vulnerable to the home run, but this will be negated pitching half his games in Petco.
All in all, this is a steal.
Hoyer just landed 40% of his rotation for the next 6+ years, 2 guys who I honestly can’t see being anything less than #3s, and can play up like true #1s due to the park effects of Petco and their own talents.

a #1 and a #2?
Try an overhyped prospect who the Padres are interested in because he no hit AA San Antonio and a guy with “all the stuff” but suspiciously no one knows about him or cares.
Not like we could’ve used a shortstop or someone who could actually hit no?

I had made peace with Heath Bell but Adams is hard to take.
I was okay with Heath because we had Adams. I hadn’t done the arithmetic the other way.
losing Adams is going to hurt us for years to come.
He was, by far, our best arm out of the bullpen. It seems people backed off of Bell due to his high-wire acts the last few years. However, I’m not so sure Adams has the durability of the stout Bell.

Wieland: carolina league: 85IP, 4BB, 96K; texas league: 44/11/36
Erlin: carolina league: 54IP, 5BB, 63K; texas league 66/7/61

Scouts like his potential
He’s athletic and has 3 plus pitches, and is adding velocity the last couple years. It will have to start showing up in the stats soon, but scouts still like his chances of being a quality pitcher. He’s still quite young for his level and hasn’t been pitching full time in pro ball too long.

It’s a shame a lot of our pitching prospects have struggled this year. At least a number of position players are having big years.
We probably won’t have too many guys at the top of the list going into 2012, but the 50-100 range should be littered with Padres prospects.

Since we can get draft picks back for him.
But I am disappointed we didn’t move Qualls. With his awful year last year there is no chance he obtains type B status. So I don’t see the reason to keep him. If they could have gotten anything for him they should have.

It sucks losing Adams but we made out like bandits in the trade.
I don’t think either will be aces. But with a team like the Padres, you really need as many quality players making the mandatory minimum as possible. The rotation looks set for the next 6 years if we never added an arm. Not a lot of stars in our minors but there sure are a lot of quality pieces.

Looks like some good moves.
Although I’m really going to miss Adams. I’ll definitely be cheering for him this year. Wieland and Erlin look like a very nice return. I’m definitely surprised that Heath wasn’t dealt. I’d like to see him take an actual hometown discount in the off-season, not just a partial discount. It’ll be interesting to see what happens. I’m definitely surprised that some teams (the Angels & the Cardinals come to mind) didn’t go after Qualls. I’m sure we weren’t asking for much.
not all prospects work out
so I like it that they got two high rated AA prospects. If one pans out, we have a great long term starting pitching staff. Latos, Richard, Stauffer, Leubke, and one of these guys, plus mix in a veteran or LeBlanc as needed. Not bad. NOW GO GET A HITTER!
Really surprised we kept Bell
Now I’m hoping we re-sign him.

MLBtraderumors.com on the two prospects.
Erlin and Wieland, who are both represented by Sosnick Cobbe Sports, ranked fourth and 22nd in Baseball America’s preseason Rangers top 30 prospects list prior to the season. Wieland has seen his stock rise since then, with a 1.23 ERA in 44 Double-A innings – including a no-hitter his last time out. Erlin, a 20-year-old southpaw, is considered among the top 35 prospects in the game by Baseball America and Kevin Goldstein.
"Over? Did you say "over"? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!"
I know it's a common strategy to go for pitching and more pitching,
But I am concerned that we didn’t get a position player. Are we going to continue to be the team with great pitching and zero offense? Also, given what our ballpark does for aging free agent pitchers, do we need to focus so much on having young pitchers in the pipeline?
you still need top of the rotation guys
they typically aren’t the kind that sign with us
by iheartyourfart on Jul 31, 2011 4:09 PM PDT up reply actions
Really, our starting pitching is just average at best
I know our staff’s ERA might be pretty good, but that’s mainly a product of Petco. On a good pitching staff Richard, Harang, Moseley are 5th starters, Stauffer and Luebke 3/4 types. We need more guys like Stauffer, Luebke and Latos and fewer guys like Richard, Harang, Moseley, LeBlanc.
Look at our starting staff’s WAR of 6.1, good for 24th in baseball. I do think that’s probably a little inaccurate, but our staff isn’t better than middle of the pack. It’s nice to be able to pick up a guy like Harang or Moseley at below market value, but it would be nicer to not have to.
I do agree though that ideally we would acquire position player prospects, but in a trade for prospects or a draft you have to go best player available. Only consider position if it’s close.

Luebke has pitched like a borderline ace and Stauffer has been a legit #2.
Petco has had zero influence on his close to 4:1 K:BB ratio and he has actually pitched better as a starter than a reliever.
Stauffer has a 3.31 ERA away from Petco.
Loobs has a 2.08 ERA away from Petco and a dead even 4:1 K:BB ratio (40:10).
These 2 guys are far, far better than 3/4 types.

btw 4:1 K:BB is elite.
Less than 10 guys do this per year in all of baseball.

I take it back.
Luebke has pitched like a bona fide ace.
He has been incredible this year.
If he’s a 3/4 then Roy Halladay and Cliff Lee are 2/3 types LOL.

Luebke has a 2.89 xFIP (removes park effects so it takes out the influence of Petco)
That is 6th in Major League Baseball (70+ innings).
He is ahead of Verlander, Sabathia, Lincecum, and Felix.
I heard those 4 guys are okay.

Luebke has been great and I like him a lot
He has also pitched 75 innings this year, and less than 100 in his career. LeBlanc still looked pretty good at 75 innings into last year (granted not as good as Cory) and he’s a fringe MLB pitcher at best
Exactly.
I like Luebke a lot. I just don’t think he’ll be able to sustain this level over the 5 more years we have him. I think he’ll be a good valuable 2-3 WAR player, maybe a little more, but lets not get carried away.

Good thing is that even with a significant regression in strikeouts, he's still a 3:1 K:BB guy making him a legit #2 (independent of park effects).

I am pretty sure xFIP is not park-adjusted
It just adjusts HR rate to league average.
Luebke is a good pitcher and I’m happy to have him in the rotation, but he’s not an ace and not a #2 on a good staff either. Though I’d be happy to have a staff of Latos, Luebke, Stauffer and 2 more like Luebke or Stauffer. Which seems doable in 2013 with those guys we have down at AA now.
by Antonio Olivares on Jul 31, 2011 8:52 PM PDT up reply actions
But I guess..
Adjusting HR rate and BABIP to league average should negate any park effects.
Anyway, I still stand by what I said Luebke is good, but not front of rotation good. I hope I am wrong though!

Word.
Tagging him as being a #3/#4 was just toooooo harsh son.

I don't think a #3 tag is bad though
A legit #3 costs a lot of money on the FA market
by Antonio Olivares on Jul 31, 2011 9:07 PM PDT up reply actions
Well #3/#4 was suggesting that he is average to below-average which I disagree with.
And believe me, AO, I am not expecting him to keep up this level of performance.
But even with a regression, particularly strikeout-wise, he is still one of the better pitchers in the game, making him a #2.
Factoring in park effects, his ERA will play up as a #1.
As I said earlier, you factor in Ks and BBs or pull up FIP and xFIP, and he’s been one of the 10 best pitchers in the game.
Even with a hearty regression, he’s still top 40, making him an easy #2/fringe #1.

*top 30
I mean, for Pete’s sake, the guy has an elite 9.6 K/9.
You don’t post a gaudy K rate like that by accident.
The man is too legit to quit.
And his stuff may not be sexy, but he’s low-90s from the left side with a good slider and great changeup.

Again, I am expecting that strikeout rate to drop, but coupled with a very low walk rate makes him a fringe #1 and no doubt #1 if ur including park effects.

Yeah I didn't mean average to below average
Just like there aren’t 30 true aces, there probably aren’t enough legit #2 or #3 guys to go around either.
An average pitcher is probably a 4th or 5th starter to me.
by Antonio Olivares on Jul 31, 2011 9:27 PM PDT up reply actions
Oh, okay.
That makes sense. Yeah, I’d prob say there are around 15 true #1s.

if you have 5 #3, you would have a top 5 rotation
"Over? Did you say "over"? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!"
Yeah, that's what I mean.
So pitching in Petco wouldn’t benefit his xFIP.

Anyone else see the rumor that the Pads and Bell's reps are talking?
Sounds like something might be in the works. Can’t say I’d mind locking Bell up long term.
Word is he wants a 3 year deal
But he’s also standing by his comments that he’ll give the Pads a “hometown discount.” Which to my mind seems reasonable.
I just feel like unless it's a substantial discount it doesn't make sense
I don’t think any team should spend more than a tenth of their payroll on a reliever. Unless Bell signs for like 4/5M a year then we shouldn’t do it.
by Antonio Olivares on Jul 31, 2011 5:12 PM PDT up reply actions
Frankly a reasonable salary for Bell shouldn't be a tenth of our payroll
I mean if a team like Oakland can have a $66 million dollar payroll there’s no reason the Padres can’t either.
I hope we sign Bell long term
That would be awesome to keep a legit All Star. Plus when we make this push in two years, it needs to be a mix of veteran leaders and up and comers. To me, Heath Bell and Chase Headley are those veteran leaders that will prove to be valuable.
Mat Latos is the real deal...Go Lakers, Pads, and Bolts

this is true
losing jerry hairston jr, chris young, garland, stairs, etc. have hurt us a lot this year and it had nothing to do with the on-the-field product
by iheartyourfart on Aug 1, 2011 6:27 AM PDT up reply actions
Well, we can resign Stairs if you want
Why ask a failed romance to come watch your successful one? You know, that's like inviting the Seattle Mariners to a World Series game. It's just weird for everyone.
Word
Hopefully the new TV deal means payroll will be starting with a 6 or 7 within a few years.

New Setup
7th – Qualls
8th – Spence (the kid is lights out)
Frieri is not reliable and Luke hasn’t been the same since he’s gotten back. Bring up Brach and let Thatcher close @ Tucson.
