Tony Gwynn Interview Part 6: On Trevor Hoffman
Yesterday after the game Jon and I finally got around to buying our tickets for the August 21st game when the Padres will retire Trevor Hoffman's number 51.
Last week I asked Tony Gwynn if his former teammate was would be inducted into the Hall of Fame. Gwynn never liked to be referred to as a "Future Hall of Famer" because of his own uncertainty and now Hoffman has started to carry that same mantle. I wondered if that moniker was premature since in five years, when Hoffman is eligible, he will no longer be the All Time Saves Leader in all likelihood. I asked Gwynn if Hoffman would still be a sure thing and make it in on the first ballot when the time comes.
Here is Gwynn's answer:

Depends who else is on the ballot
Relievers usually aren’t elected their first time, regardless of who they are. Seems like they get in when there aren’t other clear-cut choices. I also don’t think the Saves record plays into it much. It never helped Lee Smith or Jeff Reardon.

It's not the record or the numbers that's going to get him to Cooperstown on the first ballot.
It’s this.
Whomever else is on the ballot will impact his chances significantly
2016 will be the first year for Griffey and Hoffman. But there’s bound to be a backlog of worthy candidates who didn’t get elected in 2013-15.
Smoltz, Maddux, Johnson, Glavine, Frank Thomas, Piazza, Biggio.
Then there are the players who probably won’t get in (at least at first), but will still get a lot of votes:
Mussina, Edmonds, Delgado, Jeff Kent, Schilling
That doesn’t include the steroid group, who, if McGwire is any indication, will do poorly.:
Clemens, Bonds, Sheffield, Sosa
But even if you ignore the steroid group, the ballot is going to have some stiff competition in Hoffman’s first year of eligibility.
