Rizzo is reportedly here for a medical evaluation of his thumb.

That’s AFTER an MRI in Tucson. Does “one-way ticket” mean surgery?

Since Rizzo keeps talking about his hand feeling better

Seems like surgery would be an odd change of events.

Smith later commented that Rizzo had 4 bags of luggage

Which probably means he plans on being here for a while.

This really is insane hype wise

Hope Rizzo doesn’t screw up

I do agree with some of Jed's thinking though

This would really be insane hype-wise if the team wasn’t winning. Right now, with the sports radio stations also talking basketball and hockey and the Padres turning it around, the hype is less. If it had happened a month ago, it would be the #1 topic in San Diego.

It's especially refreshing

when I think back to what a debacle Savior’s call-up was, plus finding out they didn’t beat the clock after all.

Which is weird

Because I feel like they called him up a little later than this and I just saw on MLBTR they were talking about how the Dee Gordon callup should be easily outside the Super Two service time window. He must have played enough in 2007 to push him over. Because, remember, Savior was called up before he was actually named the Savior when Kouz got hurt in 2007.

Actually

Judging by some tweets I’m seeing from the Boston media, they are excited about him coming up too and want to see him come to Boston for that series.

So who gets the Axe with Hundley and Rizzo being added?

Johnson is out of options so it makes me think that Phillips goes down.

With Hawpe moving to RF it makes me think that they will send sneaky pig down.

probably sneaky pig unfortunately

if they were sending phillips down, they would have did so when they activated hundley.

I’d prefer they release at least one (if not all) of Johnson/Patterson/Cantu

I agree

Cunningham is the move.

The question then becomes, what move do they make when Maybin comes off the DL on Sunday or Monday?

could that be when we see

cantu or patterson cut? doubt it though. I suspect Forsythe goes down.

and then….
when hudson’s back?

I also wouldnt be surprised to see frieri or another reliever sent down while we play in the AL parks

Don't think it will be Forsythe

unless budbot still thinks Patterson can play second.

It's not just the 25 man, Rizzo isn't on the 40 man either.

They have to release somebody to open the 40 man, don’t they?
They can’t just remove somebody from the 40 man and keep him.

by wegotballsley on Jun 9, 2011 12:27 PM PDT reply actions

They can keep them

But other teams can claim the player if they want to add him to their 40 man roster. So far, every player the Padres have removed from the 40 man roster this year has stayed with the organization.

That sounds like they have to DFA a guy, then put the guy on waivers.

If it’s a minor leaguer, he has to stop playing until the waiver period is over, then be reassigned to the minors. Don’t they get an option to be free agents?

by wegotballsley on Jun 9, 2011 1:15 PM PDT up reply actions

Minor leaguers do not get the option to be free agents

They have to accept their minor league assignment when they clear waivers. If a major league veteran (say, Jorge Cantu) were DFAed then he can refuse minor league assignment and become a free agent. If the team really wants to keep a veteran in the minors, then they’ll usually work out some agreement in advance before they ever DFA them.
