The drug is Spice, a synthetic cannabis. Tate also tested positive for a "drug of abuse" sometime between when the Padres signed him in August 2009 and the start of this season.

  • If only Padres would open their wallet -
"At this time of year, you’re either a buyer or seller," General Manager Jed Hoyer says. "I’d love for us to make a run. Obviously, we’ve put ourselves in a deep hole and we can’t just keep wanting to get out of it. If we do make a move, it’s different." If not, Hoyer says the team "is focused beyond 2011." Which means rummage sale.
  • Q&A: Chase Headley | FanGraphs Baseball
I would say after my first full season at Petco. I realized that I had a better opportunity to hit .– hopefully hit — .280 to .300 and hit 10 homers versus trying to hit .260 with 25 homers. It’s tough to hit home runs there.

Several Padres sources confirmed Tate ---- the third overall pick of the 2009 amateur draft ---- tested positive for "Spice," a synthetic variation of marijuana.

  • PADRES: Richard helps Padres to sixth win in seven games
"He definitely has thrown better than his record shows," Padres catcher Kyle Phillips said. "He was pounding the zone and we were executing when we needed to."

  • Padres minor leaguer Tate suspended 50 games -
"Obviously, this is disappointing," said Hoyer. "He has never really gotten his career on track. We still have hopes for Donavan. But he has to get his act together. This needs to be a wake-up call."

  • Hundley OK after swollen elbow scares catcher, Padres -
"I first felt it in the third inning," Hundley said Monday afternoon. "By the eighth inning, I couldn’t throw. After the game I couldn’t bend the elbow."

  • Kansas City Royals at San Diego Padres - June 29, 2011 | Preview
"He's pitched well, especially lately," Black said after Stauffer's last outing. "Tremendous, tremendous outing again. His last five [starts] have been solid, so it was good to see him finally get some support."

  • Steady Headley reaches coveted .300 mark | News
"I'm very confident at the plate right now," Headley said. "One of the big things is obviously right-handed, I feel much better at the plate than I have in a long time. To not have that lopsided average that I've had in past years makes a big difference."

  • Kansas City Royals at San Diego Padres - June 28, 2011 | SD Recap
"Did I call it?" the skipper asked. "I had a good feeling about tonight, but I have a good feeling every night. I think we're going to win. I expect to win. But I think it's well deserved, he's pitched well. The wins are going to come if he continues to pitch like that."
