Padres' defense is offensive, lose to Pirates 7-4
At first I thought this was a Padres team that was getting off to a slow start. Then I convinced myself that they fell into an unfortunate early slump. Now I'm pretty sure they suck.
Take yesterday's game for instance. Nick Hundley threw a ball into center field again. Chase Headley made some weird error at third. Eric Patterson failed to turn a half dozen double plays. Clayton Richard gave up a grand slam.
Jason Bartlett even decided to argue with an umpire instead of running out a dropped third strike. The ball rolled all the way to the back stop and he had a decent chance of making it to first base if he tried.
"I know everybody booed that I didn’t run," the Padres shortstop explained after the Pirates’ 7-4 victory over the Home Team. "He (Winters) said I went and I said, ‘At least check it for me.’ But they usually won’t do that on strike three."
He even admits that umpires usually won't check a pitch on a third strike and he still thought he had a better chance of arguing the call than hustling to first base. He deserved to be booed. Play the game! Argue later.
I had a friend that went to the game yesterday and said that even though this was the smallest crowd of the year, they were pretty good at booing.
The only good came with a couple nice catches from Cameron Maybin and late inning home runs from Brad Hawpe and Eric Patterson. Too little, toooooo late!
Here's the game recap if you want to relive some of the magic. They don't show any of the Padres errors because they must have thought that it would incite enraged Padres fans to riot.

Hawpe is killing it with a .990 fielding %
Ahead of Pujols at .987%.
Suck on that…
Oh internet, what a wicked web you weave.
I don't care.
I want him DEAD! I want his family DEAD! I want his house burned to the GROUND! I wanna go there in the middle of the night and I wanna PISS ON HIS ASHES!
(side note: I don’t actually want him dead. I just want him to start hitting when it actually matters.)

Baby steps
He’s starting to hit, and he seems to have a much more calm approach to his slump than some of the others. :-/

to me he's looked awful
but perhaps i’m spoiled with adrian. you also have to factor in how that phantom-hit at dodger stadium would mess with hawpe’s fielding % if it was scored correctly. to be fair though, there is hope that he will improve as the season goes on and he becomes more familiar with the position. his 1b stretch has improved a little and hopefully he won’t continue to make the mental mistakes he’s been making. that said, i’ll take awful D if he continues to hit .350 like he has over his last 20 at-bats or so.

Official scorers don't seem to count Hawpe's errors as actual errors.

With good reason
These players by and large suck. They’re may stupid mistakes that the little leaguers wouldn’t make (like standing on at the plate on third strikes, missing easy double plays, dropping pop ups), and their offense with a very few exceptions is more anemic than a Hapsburg prince.
The Hapsburg's lacked iron in their blood?
huh.

I honestly don't think this would be Jed's dream team
you might qualify it with the “$42M” dream team.

At least Maybin has mostly been a positive
Anyone agree?

Things that everyone agrees have been good
Hundley
Maybin
Bullpen
Denorfia (as a backup OF)
Johnson (as a backup C)
Bartlett’s defense
Cantu’s facial hair
There’s probably something I’m forgetting….

rob johnson has also played surprisingly well
i don’t expect him to hit .320 all year… but even .250 and solid D would be way more than we were expecting

As much as I like Hundley, he just needs to start hitting AGAIN
In his last 10 games, he has seen both his AVG and OBP drop by 50 points. He has gone 5 for 36 (a .139 AVG) with 4 walks and 10 strikeouts. Of those hits, two were doubles. Over that period, he has 3 RBI.
That’s pretty terrible.
Also, if I have to be the Brad Hawpe apologist, then dammit, I’ll be it. Over his last 10 games:
10 for 39 (.256 AVG), 5 for extra bases
2 walks (this is terrible, I agree)
10 strikeouts (also terrible)
4 RBIs
Ehhhh, I don't deserve a signature...
hundles will hit
he’s always been streaky, and lately i think he’s been pressuring himself to be “the guy” and he’s been pressing at the plate and taking some ugly hacks.
and i’ll do you one better with hawpe… over his last 8 games he’s hitting .323 with 5 extra base hits. If he could find a way to hit even .260/.340/.450, it would be HUGE for this team.
If he can put together another solid week or so at the plate i think it will do wonders for the rest of his season… if he can show he’s actually still a competent hitter pitchers will have to be more careful with him and he won’t have to press as much, which will increase his walks and cut down his strikeouts a ton.

I was at the game yesterday
What a terrible performance. I was sitting on the first base side with the sun blaring in my eyes for most of the game. At least I got a good farmer’s tan out of it.
Definition of blaring
v.intr.
To sound loudly and stridently: a stereo blaring in the next apartment.
v.tr.
1. To cause to sound loudly and stridently: Don’t blare the stereo.
2. To proclaim loudly and flamboyantly: headlines blaring the scandal.
n.
1. A loud, strident noise.
2. Flamboyance.
So the sun was really loud? Or was it flamboyant? LOL.

With regard to Bartlett running out that dropped strike three, he probably would have been out by a mile. That dude is slow. He's like the "Mo Vaughn" or shortstops.
You could argue and say that’s Uribe, but that dude isn’t a shortstop. He’s a shitstop.
