Padres call up Tekotte, send Venable to AAA and DFA Deduno
Appears the #padres move: Blake Tekotte from double a for Will Venable. More on the shuffle of who is designated for assignment soon
#Padres have DFA'd right-handed pitcher Samuel Deduno to make room on the 40-man for Tekotte. #MLB
Friarhood tweeted last night that Blake Tekotte was being called up from AA, based on his sources. A few minutes later Tekotte's teammates were congratulating him on Twitter too, but official news didn't break until about an hour ago. The real mystery seemed to be who would be sent down and who would be DFA'd. Which led to a funny exchange with Pat Neshek based on how sad he looked while taking a phone call after the game. It turns out that he was just calling for a ride and it wasn't him.
Today we find out it's Will Venable being sent down which surprised me, but I guess it shouldn't have based on the way he's been playing.
But then again, maybe it should have surprised me since every player's stats look just as bad.

I wonder if this has anything to do with getting him to decide on his hitting stance
He kept tinkering with it.
Or, maybe they have decided that Denorfia is going to play RF all day, every day…
Ehhhh, I don't deserve a signature...
no, it's not.
It’s worse than every starter but Hudson and Cantu.
And I would argue that Hudson’s numbers are marginally better… we’re comparing like 3 day old bread to 2.5 day old bread…
More importantly, Denorfia, Maybin, and Ludwick are all clearly hitting better AND with more power.
Venable’s 7 extra-base hits pales in comparison to the other three outfielders. Denorfia only has 8, but he also has 46 FEWER at bats [88 vs 134 ABs].
I just assumed they were all too bad to send down.
Isn't it enough to know that I ruined a pony making a gift for you? ◔ヮ◔

i wonder if this is the end of the venable experiment
i don’t really want to give up on him, but if there’s one thing our MLB and MiLB rosters actually have in abundance it’s toolsy outfielders with marginal hitting records. Tekotte is jumping from AA, but reports say he has the hitting approach that venable has always lacked. his stats are comparable to venable, but he’s younger than will at that stage, is a better defender, and has stronger “fundamentals.” I’d say he has a decent chance of contributing something immediately… even if that’s just keeping patterson off the field.
Yay now he gets to rot on the bench like Forsythe
Denorfia sucks.

Exactly.
Just give them a half dozen straight starts…give them a shot. How could it be any worse than the garbage we’ve been watching? At least the kids have an excuse.
i think he may actually get some PT
Denorfia excelled this year and last as a role player who is largely a situational guy who can start when he gets hot. it’s consistency he has a problem with. Norf is still the de facto starter probably, but its not like he’s gonna get 90% of the games in RF. I think between starts in right and spelling maybin in center, tekotte could start maybe half the games while he’s up here. if he fails, they send him down.

This is the end of Venable
Send him out of here please, he’s been given chances, he just doesn’t show anything. Add a new RF to our long shopping list
And while I’d like to get Tekotte some playing time, I don’t think he’s a right fielder, he’s only a CF. Now we could stand to get Maybin out from time to time but just how does he get much time unless we take time from Maybin?

his bat doesn't profile well in RF
but neither did venable’s, and norf’s is pretty marginal. i think its important that we got another guy who can play CF up to the big league club because patterson has made me almost want norf in center. I don’t think it makes sense to worry about a lack of power on a team where nobody gets on base or hits with RISP anyway.

That assessment is the sensible approach.
The “profile” of a corner OF is probably somebody in the minors who’s not
ready yet (Jaff Decker) or hasn’t been drafted yet (#10 pick next month?).
I suspect that’s what Jed is thinking. He earlier said the only moves would
be injury-related, and this is the first one that’s not. This might be the last
chance for the current team, up to the end of the June draft. After that, the
trade window is open.

Honestly, we want defense in our outfield
I don’t care about bat profiles. I want defense and someone with high OBP. Those are my top two priorities for CF/RF. Those are my top two priorities for a lot of positions on this team, but especially for CF/RF.
that was the plan
but venable’s batter’s box problems kind of followed him into the field this year. he drew the majority of his value from defense and basestealing last year. this year the defense was a little disappointing (i’m speaking mostly anecdotally… i’ve seen him blow some big ones).
maybin is obviously playing great. he has some 23 year old mental lapses occasionally, but he’s a great outfielder who could become a plus plus defender. there aren’t many guys i take over maybin defensively if i’m building a team long-term.
ludwick and norf are both above average corner outfielders, but norf is kind of a stretch for a “petco RF.” i think tekkotte and cunningham would probably be better defenders there. I honestly hope we don’t see blanks in the OF anytime soon.

Venable was the weakest link.
Looking at the stats everyone else has at least 1 somewhat bright spot: Hudson and Bartlett can play a premium position and can get on base once in awhile; Hawpe and Ludwick have a touch of power, Maybin Hundley Headley are all hitting decently, particularly for their positions…
Cantu was real close… I mean really close… but his is versatile in which positions he can play, and he has, barely, more power.

He still projects better than anyone else we could get.

I’m still on board the Venable train. I think this might be the best thing for him…get him in the correct stance and let him get comfortable and he will be back.
He's 28. He may correct his stance and be a nice piece but he's no longer the future.
Oh internet, what a wicked web you weave.
He always kinda reminded me of Ruben Rivera.
A gifted athlete that would never cut it as a full time player. I was hoping his intelligence would give him the edge he needed to cash in on his talents. Doesn’t look like it’s gonna happen.
