Latos gets first win of the season. Padres beat Rockies a billion to 2.

Great job matt. The padres are starting to come together.less than a minute ago via Twitter for iPhone Favorite Retweet Reply

I only saw the beginning of the game yesterday.  Mat Latos was having the same first inning problems that he's had all year.  He was struggling with the location of his pitches and he was getting squeezed by the home plate umpire.  He ended up walking two and then Eric Patterson blew a double play opportunity by throwing a ball in the dirt that Brad Hawpe couldn't pick, but every other first basemen in the majors probably could have.  The error led to a run.

Unbeknownst to us, Latos snuck into the visitor's club house between innings and watched tape of his first inning.  He saw a flaw in his delivery, something about his shoulder opening up too early.  It turns out that Latos' trip to the club house had the same transformational properties as Clark Kent's frequent pit stops to phone booths.  Latos was Superman, minus the cape, until the 6h inning when he faced Todd Helton the Padres version of Kryptonite.

Luckily the scoring for the Rockies stopped after Helton's home run.  The Padres, however, were just getting started.  Ryan Ludwick had hit a 3 run homer in the 4th. In the 7th Chase Headley and Brad Hawpe had RBI singles and Jason Bartlett had a 2 run double that padded the Padres lead.

As a side note, Luke Gregerson also hit Carlos Gonzalez in the foot with a pitch, which is probably why Gonzalez sounded so bitchy in his post game interview

Good game Padres!  High fives all around!

I feel like the standards for "a billion" are getting lowered

We must have standards for our exaggeration!

But true.

Also, hat tip to Jodes for the OT yesterday.

800 million to 2 sounds better

She did do well with the OT, but someone was a little bitter that they didn’t get their shot at glory. Their name rhymes with Ron Pannero.

Why ask a failed romance to come watch your successful one? You know, that's like inviting the Seattle Mariners to a World Series game. It's just weird for everyone.

Thanks also to Jodes

Was a great thread – sorry to miss it. Woke up in time for the end of the game and didn’t want to jinx the glory by commenting on it…

I'm wrong

The lower bound definition of “a billion” seems to be 6. Plenty of precedent.

One of the most common uses of “a billion” happens to be for games with an 8-2 final score.

However, this is momentous occasion in that it’s the first time the Padres have beat a team “a billion to 2” to Gaslamp Ball’s history. The scores of “a billion to 3”, “a billion to 1” and even “a billion to nothing” have occurred before, but this is the first “a billion to 2”. Congratulations, Padres.

Your ability to retrieve data

on just about everything makes me a little tingly.

I think

if your average runs per game is .003, it’s okay to lower the “billion” standard.

It's sad

When your teammate doesn’t even know how to spell your name correctly.

I hope Mat corrected him.

I know I did

Or at least made fun of him on a retweet.
