Orlando Hudson lashes out at Padres fans for booing the team
A fan on Friar Nation saw Orlando Hudson yesterday morning on TV and carefully transcribed his words. Hudson criticized Padres fans because of the booing the team received after being shut out for the 7th time:
"...well that's the reason why they're fans, they can't play, they can't play at this level, some have tried and got cut at the HS level or whatever. We're the ones that are blessed enough and got talent enough to make it to the big leagues...."
Fox 5 morning host Raul substantiates the quote by tweeting Hudson's comments as well.
He also said something similar to 619Sports.net at the beginning of this video:
So if we can read into Hudson's statement, it's because of the fan's own failures, jealousies and insecurities that they boo the Padres. He takes no responsibility nor does he accept the booing as a result of their own poor performance on the field.
Hudson tweeted yesterday this similar but less offensive message:
Pad fans keep supporting us we need yall behind us. Home fans aren't suppose 2 boo ur own players.
Padres players aren't supposed to insult their own fans either.
You can hear the booing in this MLB Video Recap of 4/27's game. The booing starts after Hawpe's error and continues when he grounds into a double play later in the game.
I personally don't boo or heckle, it's not my thing. I eye roll and sigh a lot to show my frustration. But some fans feel booing is their only way to voice their displeasure and that's somewhat understandable. Of those fans that heckle some are seriously butt holes too. They don't speak for all of us. It may not be right, but it's their right.
If you look through Hudson's Twitter time line there are number of tweets where he admirably defends Brad Hawpe and Ryan Ludwick who have started off the season in severe slumps. Much as he defends his teammates, I feel the same need to defend my fellow fans who are being criticized by Hudson in his tweets.
We can be critical of the team because of the results of their poor play without it being about our own failed baseball careers. I never had any baseball aspirations, never even played little league and I'm still a fan. It has less to do with us than he thinks, and more to do with him and the team.
Baseball players have no problem accepting the cheers and accolades when they play well, they should also accept the boos and criticism when they perform poorly, it's the reality of their job.
Let's look through some of his tweets after the jump:
@loxag21 I preciate it dog I brush off haters cause there funny broke no one 2 love an have no friends. Jesus is my leader
I have no idea what that tweet means.
@Bobbycressey I'm not sayin ur booin me personally but Hawpe is my boy so if yall boo him den dats booin me too he's my dog
@HarveyJMPR yeah but ppl are booing my man Hawpe dat ain cool. U should look up his stats b4 booin
Here's Hawpe's stats:
@stuiesloan trust me boos don't bother me at all lil shawty. Cause where I'm from u better have thick skin
He sure spends a lot of time tweeting about booing for someone who isn't bothered by booing.
And now we come to his response to every bit of criticism that he or the team receives. He condescendingly calls them "lil buddy" and tells them that they should try to play Major League baseball and see how they perform, which is not the point at all. Just because they're better than us, doesn't make them better than the rest of the MLB players. The Padres are the ones that need to improve, they're the ones employed as baseball players, they are the ones chosen to represent us, we are the fans.
It'd be like telling him, "You should give up your high salary, spend all of your discretionary income on tickets, watch 3 hours of baseball every night as the team gets shut out continually and see if you can be a better fan than us."
@ABManny come 2 da field Monday we'll put u in da lineup lil buddy
@jdschultz hey lil buddy I can setup for u 2 come on da field an try dis game out let's see how well u could do
@SteveBurningham I could ask Bud Black 2 put u in da lineup an we can see how many runs u drive in
I just hope the Padres can just start winning. I'm rooting for them to win so booing won't even be an issue. I'm also hoping that I don't find a tweet from him in my inbox calling me "lil buddy' after he reads this post.

We had the debate
earlier in the week re: booing one’s own team. But regardless of your position on that separate issue, Orlando comes off as a bitter a-hole here. Fans boo because they’re jealous not to have been “blessed” with superior talent? No, fans boo to express displeasure (for the most part). (Fans in Philadelphia don’t count.)
Spot on
Whether you agree with booing bad players, cough Hawpe cough, this response by Hudson is just lame. How about you try and motivate your teammates, and yourself, to stop striking out at record pace and actually hit the damn ball? Because right now most of the Padres hitters sure don’t look any more “gifted” than the average joe in the stand when it comes to actually getting hits.
O Dog
I believe Hudsons nickname is appropriate for any padre, espeacially the last part-dog.
Hudson, you say you imvite any fan to come in the show for one day. I would love to have the oppourtunity to play one day at your rediculous wage, for that one day we will get your daily wag, right!. If I bunt one time, that will be as many times as you actually put the ball in play-Dog!!

If orlando is really offering to "setup for u 2 come on da field an try dis game"
I’d say someone should take him up on the offer.
David Eckstein is still a free agent...Just sayin'
That's what I was thinking.
I’m sure he’d back down from his offer but if he didn’t, it would be worth his ridicule to have that experience.

It would really be funny if you ended up roping a home run on your first try...
Especially if it is 20 rows deep…
Ehhhh, I don't deserve a signature...
If by 20 rows deep you mean barely past the pitchers mound then yes I could hit a home run.
I’m only talking about me, if I were to go to bat in a game. Also that’s assuming I’d actually hit the ball.

We have somebody to do that, Orlando
and he’s better at his job than you are at yours. Stop trying to do both.
no...he's not
It is a cliche that the best hitters fail 7 out of 10 times at the plate but it’s true. Orlando is batting .238 which means he’s failing more then a quarter of the time(hasn’t exactly been Ripkin with the glove either this year). Who can fail more then a quarter of the time at their job and expect to not be criticized by the people who pay them?
David Eckstein is still a free agent...Just sayin'
I think L46 was saying Jed is better at being a GM than Hudson is at being a 2B.
Also, O-Deezy fails more than three quarters of the time.

I'd enjoy seeing O-Dawg make a GLB account so we can all pick his brain on this issue.
He certainly has the free time based on his nitwitter activity.
Ehhhh, I don't deserve a signature...
I am behind on the Twitter
I saw the one yesterday that starts “Pads fans” and I was totally with him on that one. Some of this other stuff I can’t say I’m a fan of and it does make him sound petty. Don’t ruin it, O-Dawg! I was liking following you, bub!
Forget "O-Dog"; his nickname should be "Skipper"
since he’s so fond of calling people “Lil Buddy”.

I like how o-dawg tells me to look up hawpe's stats before I boo
It had the wrong effect he was hoping for. I didn’t know hawpe was playing THAT badly. Worse than I thought he was.

The proper response to Hudson suggesting people look up Hawpe's stats before booing is:
“Maybe you ought to look them up yourself.”

I'm on team o-dawg
the team has sucked so far, but the fans have sucked too. sometimes team leaders chew out their teammates to start a fire inside them (i.e. michael jordan). perhaps o-dawg is doing the same with the fans. god knows if you’re a padre fan, you like the abuse.

It's funny
that the small (in baseball terms) second baseman who wear the ‘Marvin the Martian’ double-flap helmet is calling everyone lil buddy.
“…well that’s the reason why they’re fans, they can’t play, they can’t play at this level, some have tried and got cut at the HS level or whatever. We’re the ones that are blessed enough and got talent enough to make it to the big leagues….”
There’s a difference between playing in the big leagues and winning in the big leagues, and I think we’re seeing that.
I’m a “boo-er”. It happens. If I am displeased about the performance of my team, I will let them know that. The team exists to win, not be an also-ran. And I feel like Hudson here is justifying this poor play by getting upset with those who have righful complaints. Hawpe hasn’t performed. Things haven’t gone according to plan. I don’t understand though why beration of the fans (who pay the salary of the players through ticket sales) is a good way to deal with it. I almost want to say that it’s childish to act that way, a la Milton Bradley.
If they truly are winning ballplayers, they will play well in spite of their issues, not make excuses and attack those who are basically stating the obvious.

Bingo
The Padres as they stand now ARE losers. If they don’t like being treated like losers, do something about it!
Was he making excuses?

"go look at hawpe's stats" "get on the field and actually try to play at our level"
It’s classic blame shifting. Hawpe isn’t doing crap now, Hudson knows that, but he seems to think for whatever reason that he is years younger, can hit well, isn’t looking lost out there and therefore we’re the ones with the issues by getting upset with someone because we are apparently missing talent that seems more and more likely that it isn’t there anyway.
If he simply owned up to the fact that the performance of the players has been poor, possibly use his charisma skills try to actually bring the team together and turn it around, I don’t think we would have a topic like this would be going on.
I feel like he's lucky to play in San Diego.
If he made these comments while playing for either NY team, Boston, Philly or Chicago, fans would call for his head. I was in Chicago when Milton Bradley (sorta) called out Cubs fans and it was not pretty.
David Eckstein is still a free agent...Just sayin'
cubs fans get butthurt too easily
i live in ny and this sort of thing isn’t uncommon… that said the fans’ relationship with the mets is pretty interesting. its kind of like battered-woman syndrome

"they can't play at this level"
Sounds like half the Padres roster. I think it’s a safe bet that a team of 25 random Gaslamp Ballers would also have the worst record in baseball.
Personally, I don’t boo our guys unless they’re dogging it or being jerks. But when the team stinks this bad you can’t expect the fans to keep quiet when we see nothing but strikeouts and pop ups with men in scoring position, poor defense and a complete inability to get a run across in extra innings.
I hope he realizes tweeting wont stop the booing
But winning will.

i don't really think of it as ripping the fans
twitter is a whole different medium… one of the guys was saying “you guys should thank denorfia for keeping the team ba above .200”… its not like a generic taunt from the stands. twitter is different in that it’s more face-to-face and personal (relatively speaking).
it’s like if you’re having a bad day at work, you don’t really expect someone to write on your wall “way to blow it with those TPS reports, buddy.” you kind of leave yourself open to that sort of thing with twitter.
that said, the tactful thing would have been to let it roll off his back, but i don’t think it’s the same as ripping the entire fanbase.

Hudson should be thankful Ray Kroc isn't here to take over the PA system
It takes a lot to get San Diego fans booing, so if you’re getting boos here you definitely deserve it.
Does this make anyone want to BOO Hudson?
He’s been here a month and he’s telling us how to act? Go back to the Dodgers or the Twins, I don’t really want him here anymore, he can leave with Hawpe.
This just really rubs me the wrong way. Maybe he can pick up a dictionary with all that dough he’s rolling in playing at such a high level.

I kind of feel like booing him period, but spite is a great motivator for me
Ehhhh, I don't deserve a signature...
My worthless 2 cents on all of this...
Baseball players get paid millions of dollars to entertain, generate morale, and cater to the fanbase. It’s an industry, and the customers in this case are the fans. It’s a bit like if you plunk down $35 bucks (from a job that likely pays you less than $1 million) for a movie and then find out that it is terrible (a la Dreamcatcher, Skyline, or the prequel Star Wars trilogy), you’re immediate reaction is going to voice your displeasure. Maybe you walk out. Maybe you shift in your seat. Maybe you throw stuff at the screen. Maybe you boo.
It’s one thing to ask the fans not to boo you because you’re trying your best, but it’s another to talk down to them or stubbornly make ridiculous arguments that fly in the face of common knowledge. We’re not paid to cater to the player. The player is paid to entertain the fans, and if the player does a bad job after the fans have paid to see a game then there are not a lot of options left for fans to do. We can’t demand refunds.
So, with respect to O-Dawg’s challenge: Yes, I will gladly play in place of one of the Padres for a day. Just make sure that I receive that player’s daily salary in compensation, and that you adhere to your “don’t boo the player” philosophy while I’m there and performing at the same level as that player I’m replacing.
Ehhhh, I don't deserve a signature...
While I don't necessarily agree with either....
I think there is a major difference between booing the TEAM and booing an individual player. I can handle the team sucking and being out played by every other team, as long as each player is out there playing hard and giving 100% all the time. It’s obvious that some of these guys are not a good fit for PetCo and were just brought in to fill a roster spot. I was born a Padres fan (In fact, my Parents had tickets to a double header at the Murph the day I was born and instead my Mom went into labor), and I will never be anything other than a Padres fan. Through the ups and the downs I simply just look at it as “entertainment.” Last year was a great season, and although I wanted it to end much differently, I refused to be disappointed in how things turned out. That team WAY exceeded my expectations, and that’s all I could ask for. Some years (like this one), they aren’t meeting my expectations. But I still watch and I still care. The bottom line is, fans want to see a winner. Or at least a competitive team. We aren’t getting either of those things and it’s frustrating. While I may not agree with the booing, us fans really have no other means of expressing our disgust. Orlando is totally out of bounds by attacking fans the way he has. No, we don’t get paid to play baseball. We are actually paying to watch YOU play the game. Be thankful that there are actually fans passionate enough to go to games and make some noise, whether it be good or bad. It may not be long before everyone just starts staying home, where the beer is cheap and there is no line for the bathroom, and you can boo without getting a nasty response from a rent-a-player.
im not just a fan, im a customer
So when I pay for a product I expect it to come with quality I paid for. since I know that tickets are a lot less then the disgusting premiums at NY’s ballpark I understand that I may be entitled to less, so I’m not expecting a world series. In fact, I have long given up on the idea of ever winning one in San Diego. Believing it will ever happen just used to hurt too much.
But u do believe that the price I pay and that the price that sponsors pay for ads and that the amount paid to each player was with the expectation that they would play up to par with the average professional MLB player. And as a customer if they don’t do that I think I have a right to complain. If I find a life of dog crap in my McDonald’s hamburger do I first need to work behind the McDonald’s counter as a cashier before I can be worthy of complaining about the product I paid for? I think not. I don’t believe that we should view this.any differently. So I’m not sure how people do things where Orlando is from, but where I grew up, if you paid for something and you didn’t get it you have every right to ask some questions, complain, or in this case boo.

In my heart, I cannot boo the players
I know that they are trying their best. They work incredibly hard, and playing 162 MLB games is a feat that I cannot even imagine doing. On the other hand, I understand how frustrating it is to watch this team, and the temptation is there. Yet, my boos would be more directed at ownership than at players. To me, the owners will always be the real jerks of the professional sports world. The players are merely trying to realize a dream, giving it their all, risking their mental/physical health.
