Look at it this way, the Padres didn't play well offensively or defensively but they pitched well for the most part this series. Also, the Phillies are a far superior team right now in just about every conceivable way. They also rake when they get to Petco Park and keeping them to under 4 runs per game seems like a moral victory to me.
I'd be more upset if the Padres were a better team that underachieved. If you really thought the Padres were going do anything but maybe squeak out a win, you were doing a little wishful thinking or suffer from delusions of grandeur.
Yes the team isn't playing well, but I'm still optimistic that something will click soon and we'll see some better baseball out of them in the near future.
Also, Bud Black has really grown on me the last couple years. He went from a manager with boring cliched answers to one who looks and sounds like a real leader. I like the cut of his jib. Watch him handle these questions and stick up for his players.
