Winter Meetings Open Thread
The Winter Meetings started today. With so much happening at the meetings I thought it might be nice to have an open thread to post any Padres related (or unrelated) news/rumors or thoughts on such news/rumors.
The stuff I have seen so far that pertains to the Padres:
The Doyers signed Jairston to a 2 year contract worth $6M. This news disappoints me because he was a guy I would have liked to see the Padres sign.
The active Doyers are supposedly close to signing Aaron Harang as well. Harang would be their 7th free agent signing of the offseason already. Two of their signings are guys I wanted the Padres to sign, Capuano and Jairston. Damn. The Harang signing would also give the Padres another sandwich round pick.
The Padres are supposedly getting interest in Headley, but they are asking for "the moon." Which is exactly what they should be asking for. The Padres could use the moon. I think it is a year too early to move Headley, but if they do get offered the moon I would probably be okay with it.
The Padres are supposedly interested in Andrew Bailey and several FA arms to replace Bell. The FA arms definitely get my vote. I would be quite disappointed if the Padres moved anyone of value for a reliever. The Padres should be a team that trades relievers for prospects or young players (like Hoyer did), not the other way around.
I think that is all that has caught my interest so far.

Well said
Curious to see who we get as the week moves along. Not bummed about harang at all, more than happy w the pick.
Mat Latos is the real deal...Go Lakers, Pads, and Bolts
Really like this run-down, thanks for writing it
— I feel like one reliever would be okay, but any more than that and the Padres are pushing it. Next year isn’t a contending year, but a solid guy with experience would be good as the closer. With all the pitchers coming through the system, the last thing they need is a whole bunch of older FA relievers clogging up the majors. Not to mention these arms being more expensive, and possibly less talented.
— Don’t trade Headley, not that I like him that much but what the MLBTR commenters (I know >_>) wanted was someone like Casey McGehee, and I was revulsed by that. He’s good enough for now, and then the minor leaguers will take over and then he’s trade bait.
— HOWEVER, corner outfielders with some speed (or a more power-hitting CF) would be freaking excellent if somehow they could grab it. Which knowing the Padres, they won’t.
(and these are my (near-2am) thoughts for the night)
don't write us off for 2012 yet
byrnes has shown so far in both SD and AZ that he is aggressive. the doyers, vagiants, and lolkies are already looking worse than last year and AZ had a lot go right for 2011. the division is seriously weak and i doubt it will take 90 wins to take it next season.
there are a lot of variables though. we’ve gotta figure out how guzman fits in, whether rizzo and blanks are long-term answers, who’s gonna play RF, how the bullpen will hold up, etc. i do like our chances going forward though. Mat and Stauff are finally going to be healthy and unchained in the starting rotation. Luebke and Moze can build off the flashes of excellence they’ve shown last year. and we’ve got clay, bass, and a huge influx of SP talent coming up behind. i expect hundley, headley, and maybin to build off of the strides they’ve taken last year as well. there’s a lot to be excited about and i think these guys contribute to a winning squad sooner rather than later.

Oh yeah! We totally have a chance
Every time I wonder what type of mental illness causes someone to be excited about a team recently devoid of its few star ballplayers, I am reminded that “fan” is short for “fanatic”. So yes…. Totally. Don’t count us out. That Josh Byrnes has an awesome history of putting championship teams together and plus, we just signed Mark Kotsay. Jesus Christ this shit is ridiculous sometimes.

diamondbacks finishes:
2005 (before byrnes) – 77-85
2006 (first season) – 76-86
2007 – 90-72
all the while building from within to acquire and develop the core of their franchise (upton, young, drew, etc.). he and jed were definitely on the same page with the re-building effort here in san diego. the farm is more stacked than its ever been and the bigs has a core of young and promising players in headley, maybin, hundley, latos, luebke, and stauffer – all of which are under club control through their prime years.
yeah of course i’m being a homer and rooting for my team, but talent wise this team isn’t far from competing. they just gotta plug the holes and put it all together.

I'd rather be ridiculous and have optimism
than write it all off , be sour at every move, and make not so thinly veiled insults at those that are optimistic about the chances.
Chances are, we wont win. But , you never know. It’s why the game is played. Alot would have to go right, but 2010 was supposed to be a crap year, and alot went right and we had a chance to the end. the 2011 D-bags were projected to be among the majors worst, if not THE worst team.
Sometimes I wonder what mental illness has to be taking place to claim to be a fan and come to a fansite, have nothing but negativity to say about the team, and question the mental stability of a fan who is just expressing some optimism.

I think as a Padres fan you have to be realistic...
…and not get your hopes up too much.
I think a lot of the pieces work, and will be very good next year. However, do I see them making the playoffs? Probably not. Would I be glad if I did? You bet.
I think realizing that this is a team in rebuilding and soon to pick of a LOT of excellent minor league talent is something that should make someone non-optimistic about the upcoming major league season. That being said, I’d rather be down on one season and then have the team be successful from that rebuilding for the next five or ten. I am afraid that Byrnes will try to make too much of a “splash” coming out this year, and will mess up the (we assume) partially-successful groundwork that Hoyer left before his departure.
And btw to respond to cubbuster for a second, Mark Kotsay is STILL awful. Just like I said last time he was on the team. Winning a championship requires getting players who are actually good. But then again, we’re not a championship contending team. Strong homegrown players and key FA signings will get us there. Not a 3rd 4th OF.
and headley's not going anywhere
unless we get something crazy for him. if someone is going to give us a quality infielder and a stud SP prospect then you take it in a heartbeat and try your chances with guzman/darnell/forsythe at 3b.
there’s not really any reason to move him, but at this stage you listen on everyone. if gyorko rakes again in AA next year then you think about cashing headley out before 2013. its not like the starving thirdbase market is gonna right itself overnight.

I really hope they can dump o-dog on someone
I don’t really get the Bailey move. I would rather keep our young talent and use internal options or FA arms.
This is a terrible thing for the Padres. - Jerry Coleman
Daniel Murphy
Apparently the Padres have some interest in him. I’m not sure how he fits. He seems like another guy that is a first baseman by trade, but has been tried at other positions because he’s blocked at first. We have too many of those guys. We need a true outfielder. Pagan is who they should be seeking from the Mets.
by Antonio Olivares on Dec 6, 2011 1:41 PM PST reply actions
Murphy has experience at 1B, 2B, 3B, and even some time in the outfield
I think that versatility could be beneficial.
TBD

Huston Street
Again, why? I would rather keep the prospects.
This is a terrible thing for the Padres. - Jerry Coleman
I'd be fine with it if it was no prospects, but the whole contract
Like the Orlando Hudson for Huston Street idea I’ve seen.
by Antonio Olivares on Dec 6, 2011 1:45 PM PST up reply actions
Straight up O-Dog for Hudson, for sure, in a heartbeat.
Traderumors though says they would eat his salary for prospects.

Mets ruining my plans for the Padres
They traded the right fielder I wanted, Pagan, to the vagiants. The Giants sent Andres Torres and Ramon Ramirez to the Mets. Should make the Giants better next year. Damn.
They also signed a reliever I wanted, Frank Francisco, to a 2 year/ $12M deal. Maybe a little steep. Beats the heck out of trading prospects for Bailey though.
by Antonio Olivares on Dec 6, 2011 7:18 PM PST reply actions
Yeah , I have a hard time
with the idea of trading prospects for a short term closer, in what is projected to be a bad year. Trading prospects is a win now move, and if that was the mode we were in , we should have just overpaid Bell. But we aren’t looking to be in win now mode, so finding someone servicable, or even giving one of the kids a shot, experience sounds more palatable.

there’s still a good chance we move either him or bartlett

We get a piss poor closer for $7.5 mil
Which is nearly half our money we have for all free agents
Brilliant
At least we didn’t give up prospects

Pirates sign Erik Bedard
If we were going to sign a SP I thought he might be an ideal choice. Probably looking to rebuild value after a strong come back year in 2011. Could be a great bargain. The risk of injury would be minimal to the Padres because of their supply of arms in the upper minors.
Oh well. Wilson and Buerhle are still available!

Marlins looking to move Hanley Ramirez
The Marlins didn’t seem interested in trading new third baseman Hanley Ramirez at today’s Jose Reyes press conference, but ESPN’s Buster Olney says they’re now looking to move Hanley after his agent asked for a restructured contract.
Probably never going to happen, but I think if the Padres traded Hudson or Bartlett they would have room for Ramirez’s $15M and come in under $55M payroll. Especially if Headley was involved in that deal for Ramirez.
Like I said, probably not going to happen, but I think it should happen. I think the team should be very competitive in 2013 and beyond. Hanley would definitely improve the team in 2013 and 14.
If Chase’s trade value is anywhere close to his actual value then it probably wouldn’t take much more than Chase to acquire Hanley. Though it seems Chase is at least a little (likely a lot) undervalued due to his skill set at 3B and depressed Petco numbers.

kuo would be worth a ST invite
if he doesn’t get offers elsewhere. skip schumaker could also make for a decent super utility guy a la jairston. i think it sort of depends on what the club’s short term plans are for forsythe/cabrera/parrino and what happens with odawg and bartlett.

Ramirez has had temper tantrums in the past before, and I don't think he'd be too patient in San Diego
where he would while away his prime losing games and watching his home runs Petco’d.
It’d be an awesome move on paper, but there are so many reasons why it wouldn’t work out.

#Bluejays r other team joining #Redsox #Padres #Rockies pushing hardest for Niese #Mets
I think Niese is a fine pitcher, but with the Padres pitching depth in AA/AAA it seems like an odd move to make. I imagine they would have to give up some of that pitching depth to acquire him and it seems like they’d rather have their talent in the upper minors than in the MLB next year.
Although Niese could be a potentially valuable trade chip after pitching for the Padres for a year.

Too much
Supposedly he is seeking a 3 year deal, which is nutty. He’s one of those guys that the Padres could spend money on, but it wouldn’t really upgrade the team because he’s no better than Denorfia/Venable.
Same could be said for a lot of the FA outfielders out there.
by Antonio Olivares on Dec 7, 2011 7:06 PM PST up reply actions
Personally I'd think he'd be slightly better than our army of 4th OFs
But yeah, all comes down to risk/reward. It just seems with the signing of Street that we miraculously have money to blow.
Ross does destroy lefties
Which makes him useful, but probably not worth the $5-7M for 2+ years that he wants.

Wilson to the Angels as well
They just stole the winter meetings from the Marlins. I didn’t think they had much money to spend.
Though apparently the big market marlins are far from done with their offseason moves.
As for Trumbo, I’m not a huge fan. He did hit a lot of home runs, but his OBP was under .300. I think I’d rather have Blanks/Rizzo/Guzman at 1B.
by Antonio Olivares on Dec 8, 2011 8:07 AM PST up reply actions
He was a bit streaky at times, I admit
But until I see more of Rizzo in the major leagues and him actually doing well, I’m not believing any more hype. I remember the KT years….with all sincerity, fuck “potential”. Still going to trust Jed for a bit, though….give him another year or two, that’s it.
Guzman could be legit if he can somehow continue doing what he did. I’m cool with having him here just for what he did last season alone. Blanks has been…..well, talk here is that after next year we may be giving up on him. I’m inclined to agree now.
And for the record, it’s not like Trumbo is the greatest 1B ever. It’s just that he’s probably a sizable upgrade at that position.
Rule V draft
Padres San Diego Padres
#Padres did not select or lose a player in Major League phase of Rule 5 draft at #wintermeetings
Good news. There was some worry that Drew Cumberland or Jonathan Galvez would be selected. Nice to keep potentially interesting bat Matt Clark as well.
They did lose Aaron Poreda and Matt Buschmann in the minor league portion of the draft. Just Richard left from Peavy trade now.
They also signed some guy named Michael Wing in the minor league portion. He is an infielder with okay stats, old for his league, has played multiple positions but none well. Likely nothing more than organizational filler.
by Antonio Olivares on Dec 8, 2011 8:01 AM PST reply actions
galvez worried me
but there’s no way anyone was going to give an MLB roster spot to cumberland after being out of baseball for a year. i’m thinking he gets extended spring training then repeats his last level. hopefully he can get it together and produce like he did in the past and his health is stable.
This
I’m not a doctor (I just play one on tv) but I really hope the vertigo and inner ear condition is something he can control. I would love to see an infield of spangenburg and cumberland in a few years. If nothing else it would be fun to try and hear Jerry Coleman announce 4-6-3 double plays.

dodgers signed harang to 2 years + vesting option
wow i’m glad we didn’t get in on that. the deal is gonna be worth between $12-18m
Padres should get $1 - 2 mil
back from each pitcher whose career they resurrect
On the other hand, you have different fingers.
So the Padres went to Dallas
and the only people who enjoyed themselves were those who have joint loyalty with the Angels, the Padres reporter who was describing beer more then any moves by the Padres (free vacation and drinking) and the Rockies who got rid of a substandard closer
Boy I’m feeling really optimistic now
