Plus, the Padres didnt lose anyone of significant value to them
It should put a little fear in the opposing pitchers.

Whaaaaaaaaa!
A RH corner outfielder that’s hit 20+ HR over the last 4 years….I smell a rat!
"The Internet?! Is that thing still around?"
If
he can stay healthy this is a huge pick up

Is this some alternate reality?
The Padres just got a power hitting outfielder whose not over 30 and not a history of being injured?
Only injuries I'm seeing
Was a bout of plantar facitis in May 09

Nevermind
Just found the shoulder injury. Nothing major though and he still hit over 20 HR despite it.

Carlos Quinten injuries have cost me many fantasy baseball games over the past few seasons...
with that said, I love the deal still.

i like it a lot!
but what now about blanks? venable?

Venable, I think we keep around a while longer.

Probably another good reason to dump him

If TJ surgery
also taught blanks how to hit a curveball I’d say lets go with him Quentin and Maybin if not lets keep looking

totally forgot about guzman

Hope we keep Guzman. He's a solid hitter that we need.
But if any of the other 3 left I wouldn’t have a problem.
This was a "lower the payroll now" move
We gave them…. uhh… duds… for a starter.
Decent trade. Not complaining, but it reinforces the “rebuilding in 2012”.
How so?
So far every move we’ve made has not only made us better for the future, it’s made us better than 2011. Seems to me we’re rebuilding for 2012, not in 2012.
by athletics68 on Dec 31, 2011 11:45 AM PST up reply actions
nah, we traded Latos for youth
We grabbed a couple of 1 year players whose contracts will be off the books in 2013.
This is “we have to spend 50 million on payroll… how do we get there?”—-spending.
Castro was looking to be a busted prospect. And we sent nothing (much) to the Rockies for Street, who we may trade during the summer. And we may trade Quentin as well, if he is in demand. Sox and Rockies are dumping salary, we were in position to take on salary.
We may look decent in 2012, but this is a rebuilding move.

So wait, we're buying a bunch of quality players
Who in all likelihood won’t be on the roster in 2013 and this is a rebuilding move? Seems to me we’re building for 2012 and if they don’t work out we’ll dump them at the trade deadline and build for 2013. Not sure how you see that as not building for this year at this time though.
by athletics68 on Dec 31, 2011 12:34 PM PST up reply actions
My point
If the payroll is only 30-40 million, people will complain and it will be a PR nightmare.
So, they go out and get a couple of ~$7million for 1 year contracts. Boosts the payroll, hopefully improves us for this year, but provides cover for rebuilding.
For example: Adams and Latos trades; Letting Bell walk.
I don’t see these moves as “we are going to win in 2012”. I see these moves as “let’s throw our fans a couple of bones and focus on the future”. I would love to see us kick ass this year, but it’s hard for me to believe that is going to happen when we lose our best two relievers and our #1 starter (from last year).
by Zen Blade on Dec 31, 2011 1:41 PM PST up reply actions 2 recs
yes, shame to trade away all those players
because the Padres were scary good last year and just needed a few upgrades to win the division
On the other hand, you have different fingers.
I can't tell if this is sarcasm...
or if you’re busting on the NL West, or if you’re actually serious.
In any case… I’m glad Bell walked rather than picking up his salary, he nearly gave me a heart attack everytime he came in to save a game. With Street we are almost certainly guaranteed to get an upgrade over Bell’s closer song.
As for the Latos trade. meh. We got a coupla major league ready upgrades at positions that we need i.e. first base and Boxberger might be able to step into the bullpen
I like how the BS can range from REALLY negative to a little bit positive.
Why ask a failed romance to come watch your successful one? You know, that's like inviting the Seattle Mariners to a World Series game. It's just weird for everyone.
Here's what worries me
He’s a streaky hitter, and he’s playing in a place where guys who it for power go to die. This could either work well for us, or this could be Ryan Ludwick part Deux.

non-streaky hitters with 30+ hrs
are $20 mil a year
There is no downside to this move
On the other hand, you have different fingers.
by Hormel on Dec 31, 2011 11:54 AM PST up reply actions 1 recs
Well the downside is we give up 6 years of 2 decent pitching prospects
While Castro and Hernandez were not top prospects it is likely their combined value over the next 7 years is more than Quentin’s value next year.
I do think it makes us better in 2012, hopefully that matters. Hopefully with it being a contract year Quentin plays well enough the first half that we could trade him at the deadline if we are out of it.

Here's what I'm worried about
This is a guy with proven success, under 30 years old, that’s now on the Padres, with nothing to indicate that he’s not a great player.
I’m really worried about ummmm….. Injury risk? No that was Bartlett. Past his prime? No that was every signing whose names I recognize. Too young? No that’s every signing who’s names I DON’T recognize.
This is a great move.

At least people (Hacksaw) won't be able to use the "Oaklandization" line anymore
The A’s payroll is currently down to 23 million. We’re at least double that now if not more.
by athletics68 on Dec 31, 2011 12:36 PM PST up reply actions
Oakland's payroll is projected to be around $36 million, barring more trades
Rookies and other non-arby guys get paid too. Cots doesn’t factor in those salaries until the start of the season.
The monster at the end of this blog.
Point still stands
If we’re up in the 50 mil+ range.

a quote from bleacher report
“But Quentin’s not the kind of hitter that’s going to have a lot of success hitting in San Diego. He’s a career .252 hitter, and even those numbers are skewed by one .288 season. He’s also never played more than 131 games in a season. Lastly, Quentin’s home stadiums have always been hitter-friendly parks. That’s no longer the case.”
i usually take their writing with a grain of salt, but this makes me think…

"...and never forget that until the day when God shall deign to reveal the future to man, all human wisdom is summed up in these two words,-Wait and hope."
I am okay with the move
I have watched quite a few White Sox games and Quentin is a solid player when he is on the field. He always seems to miss a decent chunk of time with nagging injuries over the course of the year.
I do like Quentin’s bat. He has the type of power that will play at Petco. He doesn’t strike out a ton, but he never carries a high average because he never carries a high BABIP. Partly because he’s a slow runner. He also seems to hit a lot of fly balls.
His fielding is very bad though. I didn’t watch many White Sox games last year so I’m not sure if his fielding actually improved, but his horrible UZR’s in 09 and 2010 were legit.
All in all I imagine he’s somewhere between a 2-3 WAR player if he stays mostly healthy. Which I think Blanks could definitely do, or even Venable. The biggest thing is probably the fact that Quentin’s a relatively proven player compared to other options there. Plus it puts us in that $50M range.
by Antonio Olivares on Dec 31, 2011 1:03 PM PST reply actions 1 recs
Quentin in LF, Venable in RF
We are probably okay for fielding since Maybin will be in CF.
If Quentin is RF… I think we will have troubles defensively.
Actually the more I think about it the less I like the move
We didn’t give up a ton, but Castro and Hernandez should both make it to the big leagues. If just one of them ends up making it as a starter rather than a reliever then 6 years of them is much more valuable than Quentin.
Plus, with the Padres current pitching staff they can’t be expecting to actually compete in 2012. With that being the case, I think I would rather give Blanks/Guzman as many starts as possible to let them audition for starting gigs in 2013. I imagine if we didn’t pick up Quentin and just rolled with Blanks/Guzman in LF we would get about the same production from that spot. Though Quentin is a safer bet, I don’t know if we should be going with the safest bet in 2012.

Don't like it
He’s a deadpull hitter. According to his spray chart, he only managed 6 HRs at the Cell last year. If he can’t hit home runs at US Cellular Field, he’ll be Mr. Warning Path at Petco this year. It’s the second coming of Ludwick.

From watching him play, I think he's capable of hitting 25-30 HR's here
I bet he hits 25+ HRs if he plays 150 games. Though more likely he’ll play 120 games and hit 20 HRs. Or even more likely than that he’ll play 60 games, hit 12 HRs and be traded at the deadline.

I think I like the move
it gives us someone to watch hit for 2012 (and I think from a PR perspective the Padres really needed to make a move like this to quell fan unrest somewhat) and while Quentin’s production will be short-lived, the farm depth makes it unlikely that Castro or Hernandez were long-term answers for anything either.
The Division is winnable folks.

Hometown guy from Chula
Getting a legitimate right hand pull power hitter on the cheap, which is the only way we’d get one other than an Alonzo, makes Headley, Hundley and every other bat better and takes away some of pressure on pitchers. he’s a character guy, Kotsay can’t do it alone. Another year of praying on blanks and venable is futile, maybe doable as platoon. Defensive liability but not negative bat speed like Ludwick, shoot in NL West he’s just below Kemp, Cargo and Upton. if Alonzo hits and head and hund stay healthy, enough to win some games. Guzman plays LF versus some lefties.
