Comparing Seasons: Why 2010 was the most fun since 1998.
Since 1998 the San Diego Padres World Series bound San Diego Padres we have had 5 winning seasons, 2 playoff appearances, and 2 "just missed" playoff seasons.
All of these were fun in some way, but to be honest, only one was, for me, included the "Summer of Fun" and it was 2010.
Those two playoff teams were infuriating on a number of levels. Jake sucked serious bunghole in the Playoffs, the Cardinals taunted and destroyed us... and besides some great battles with the Dodgers, and really fun May's, and a Cy Young season, nothing seemed special for me.
However, 2010 was our "Let it Ride Year" much like 2004 was a "Screw you Pundits" year for the Chargers, 2010 for the Padres was a "Every since computerized or expert evaluator thinks we are going to lose 135 games" and we gave everyone a big sh*tburger to eat, and won 90 games.
September brought wrath and ruin on us like no other September has. But I had SO MUCH FUN! I had Bachmann Turner Overdrive stuck in my head while watching Jerry Hairston Junior field ground balls at shortstop and watching David Eckstein hit walk off home runs.
Thats what brings me to the ballpark. Not big time free agents. Watching young talented players get a shot with some good chemistry vets who contribute clutch hits, and one mopey all-start first baseman driving in 35% of our runs.
It was a good year, because it was fun. I like fun. O-Dawg is not fun.

All in all,
I will take getting blown out in the playoffs over a September collapse every time
On the very next play Venable soiled the sheets again
i agree with Mr. DanielX
2010 was the most fun, as it was so unexpected. 90 wins was also higher than either of the playoff teams. making the playoffs at 82 wins and getting swept was actually kind of embarassing. not that I wouldnt take it, but 90 and just missing with a team expected to lose more than 90 was much more exciting

I also think
the failures of 2011 (as well as 2008 and most of 2009) made 2010 seem, in retrospect, even better.
