San Diego Padres hire former Mets GM, Omar Minaya

"Who? That guy right there? Yeah. He's 26. He said he's how old? ¡Dios mío! No way! I got pubic hair younger than that guy."

On the day we lose Heath Bell, we gain Omar Minaya. It's the Circle of Life as a Padres Fan.

#padres have hired omar minaya. Great scouting acumen, great guy, latin america expert.

You'll remember Omar Minaya as the former GM of the Mets and the Expos. Minaya had the wonderful job of running the Expos while they were owned by 29 other baseball owners looking to dismantle the team and move it to Washington, DC. Given no budget and instructions to burn the sh_t to the ground, he still managed to take the Expos to second place and cobble together two winning seasons over three years. He also spent time as the Mets GM, notably signing Pedro Martinez and Carlos Beltran. His previous stint with the Mets had him assisting Steve Phillips, who likes to pretend that he's a GM for TV.

No definite word yet on what Minaya's job will be for the Padres, though, being an expert on scouting and Latin America, I full expect him to save the Padres billions of dollars by correctly being able to tell the difference between a 25 year old Dominican and a 12 year old Dominican.

I dunno

As long as he’s not the GM how much harm can he do?

I think he's a good add

I just can’t shake the feeling that one of his more prominent previous jobs was trying to keep a sinking ship afloat.

Good hire, as long as he is only advising . . .

In his two stints as GM he made some solid moves and at least one historically bad trade (and I’m not talking about when he sent Heath Bell to the Padres for Ben Johnson and Jon Adkins)

Well, at least we don't have to worry

that he will trade away Heath Bell for a bag of rocks

holy crap!

I swear…we could hire a bag of dog crap as our clean up hitter and you guys would be “OK” with it and feel like its “a solid move”.

It used to actually bother me. But I think I get it now… Positive thinking is good for the heart and anything good for the heart helps add years to your life. That means that gaslampball is going add years to my life (which will offset what being a padres fan has done to me), not to mention that you guys would be pretty great to have around when things go wrong… I mean imagine what you guys would say if the sky started falling: stuff like.. its cool, this might actually strengthen our atmosphere or stuff like that.

So thanks guys. Omar minaya sucks. But yeah, you guys don’t. In fact, you all are great, and I could use more of you around…. Man I should have made a fanpost out.of this somehow.

Dude

Omar Minaya in the front office isn’t all that upsetting. What’s the worst he could do? Convince the Padres to trade the farm system for some over the hill Latino ballplayers? At least it’d be something to see at the big league level.

Decker and Wieland for Papas Fritas

Can’t wait.

Why ask a failed romance to come watch your successful one? You know, that's like inviting the Seattle Mariners to a World Series game. It's just weird for everyone.

New poster here....IMO, Omar Minaya is bad news buuuut...

As long as he’s not making GM decisions then, maybe he can contribute?

Also, I would note that those second-place Expos were mostly already put together once he arrived.

Welcome!

And maybe they were put together, but they were a loser before he got there so I think we can give him some credit for it.

Thanks!

Yeah, maybe. He sure made a mess of the Mets though!

As for me, I was born in Orange County and grew up a Halo fan. Still am but I’ve always had a secret crush on the Pads. Friends and family live down there and plus, they’re in the NL so I can mostly keep both loves separate without much conflict.

Live in Brooklyn, currently. Definitely gonna see the Friars when they come to CitiField. Seems like you all got a good sense of humor and a sound knowledge of baseball here on Gaslamp. Glad to be on-board…

Welcome as well

I like your style already – you’ll do well hear, and soon you’ll have a glb crush as well. Might be worth checking out the glb wiki if someone offers to mow your lawn though (or for any other glb memes)…

While we're at it.

Can we actually sign the A’s cleanup hitter? Josh Willingham is a good bat.
