Mat Latos traded to the Reds
I felt like this might be coming. The talk about Mat Latos not being untouchable being touchable had increased in the last week. it was also hinted at that he would not be in the Padres long term plans.
Latos had a stellar year in his rookie season but suffered from a sophomore slump of sorts in 2011.
The San Diego Padres have traded pitcher Mat Latos to the Cincinnati Reds for pitchers Edinson Volquez and Brad Boxberger, infielder Yonder Alonso and catcher Yasmani Grandal, the two teams announced Saturday afternoon.

I know the farm system has improved, but it’s not much fun waiting for 2014.

Full trade was for Volquez, Alonso, Boxberger and Grandal...
Still don’t see the value in this. We traded our ACE for a historically inconsistent pitcher, another catcher we don’t need, a reliever we don’t need, and a first baseman who’s crap that we don’t need.
how do we not need a catcher?
do people really think Hundley is the long term answer?
He is hardly ever healthy, and hardly ever productive when he is healthy.

For a catcher it is...
That’s what just feels wrong about this trade. We got stuff we already had, 1B prospect, younger catcher, and a starting pitcher. And in the end we lost a much better starter to get Volquez…
by athletics68 on Dec 17, 2011 11:20 AM PST up reply actions
Hundley never stays healthy. We have no catching prospects anywhere near major league level. One of those 1B prospects could be traded.
couldn’t we forgo the catcher position all together? like just ptich the ball so the batter can hit it every time and use the extra position in the field somewhere? like a fourth outfielder or a second shortstop? call him a tallstop or shorterstop or something?
Forget the brown...Bring back Hudson & Bauer!
you're missing the point of my reply
Being a good hitter on the padres is like being the thinnest kid at fat camp. 132 ops+? I guess a .288 avg is alright but not great. I like Nick Hundley but I don’t think he is goingto get much better than last year.

I would take a catcher who bats .288 and has an .824 OPS and 36% CS rate
I would take that and just fantasize all day about how awesome my team is…
I don’t know what sort of numbers you expect a MLB starting catcher to put up, but those are great numbers.
Actually, let me rephrase that… for NL catchers with 300+ Plate appearances, he had the highest .OPS (despite PETCO)…
So, apparently you want the best catcher of all time instead of Hundley??
http://espn.go.com/mlb/stats/batting/_/position/c/league/nl/sort/OPS/order/true/minpa/300
Hey, 2011 wasn't Hundley's first year in the majors.
Yeah, he hit .288! Awesome!
Oh, wait. he hit .237 in 2008, .238 in 2009 and .249 in 2010.
.288, .237, .238, .249. Which number seems out of place?
Let’s go by OPS!
.636, .729, .726, .824. Again, which one seems out of place?
Hundley is good for 80 games a year and an OPS just north of .700.
by walnut falcons on Dec 17, 2011 12:13 PM PST up reply actions

no i want better hitters all around
great our catcher was good (sorta) for catchers…what about the players at the corners? what about the outfield positions? Our catcher shouldn’t be one of our best hitters.
Forget the brown...Bring back Hudson & Bauer!
not sure what you are smoking....
He looked pretty good to me in his 300+ plate appearances and .824 OPS and solid defense…. 36% caught stealing—-AWESOME.
Yes, he isn’t going to play 6-7 games a week. Most catchers platoon, but he is probably good for 400+ PA.
Hundley has never gotten 400 PAs in a season
He hasn’t ever reached 350.
How is he “good for 400+”?
by walnut falcons on Dec 17, 2011 12:16 PM PST up reply actions
It's called growth.
He grew into the position last year and was solid by the end of the season.
If he keeps it up, he gets more at bats. Before he was in a pretty even 50/50 platoon. I see him getting the majority of the at bats this year. I don’t think that is too much to expect.
Catchers are different than other position players.
Mmmmhhhh
I don’t know what to think about this. Time will tell, I guess.

Looks like Rizzo is up on the block next
According to some MLB execs Rosenthal has interviewed. Explains getting the youngish 1B in this trade. Rizzo’s days as a Padres, Tucson or San Diego, appear numbered.
Can't stop feeling Boston pulled a fast one on us
Like they knew Rizzo wouldn’t amount to much in the big leagues. Hopefully Casey Kelly will pan out, but if we trade Rizzo, it just adds to that feeling of disappointment. Though it sounds like getting Wade Davis from Tampa is a possibility.
25 years as a baseball fan and I'm still confused by the infield fly rule
Rizzo's MLB performance last year didn't mean much
He was really rushed up to the bigs. 2011 was his first year in AAA.

Hmmm…. too bad you can’t use proper names in Scrabble, these guys would KILL with a triple word score.
And I think the Padres were worried about Latos long-term outlook with his maturity issues. I think they might have thought that he will be his own worst enemy in the future. But you can also look at that as passion, so we’ll see how he does with the Reds.

WHAT THE FUCK?
I mean… when do they want this team to build for a run????
Byrnes reign = Rebuild 2.0
He better have a VERY VERY good explanation for this. We traded a cheap ACE PITCHER… for… a bat? I don’t even know….
I mean, just what the fuck?
I just don’t see the logic behind this, and I hope I am missing something. Because it seems we just traded away our best pitcher for another young bat that may or may not pan out in PETCO…
by Zen Blade on Dec 17, 2011 11:06 AM PST reply actions 3 recs
latos trade /= rebuilding
the trade isn’t money motivated. it helps us this season (a starting first baseman and a starting pitcher with upside) as well as in the future with the relief help and a great catching prospect. also, if volquez pitches well he’s under control for ‘13 so he’d have a lot of value going into the deadline — i’m not saying trade him for trading’s sake, but with all the SP talent coming up we can cash out volquez for an area of need.
by iheartyourfart on Dec 17, 2011 9:13 PM PST up reply actions
That is the most interesting thing about this trade
and lost on most fans, that this was a pure baseball move.
If you believe in development windows, and having good/young/cheap talent, then there is no reason to trade Latos as he would be an essential part of a 2013-2015 run. We could have bought out 1-2 years of free agency with an extension this or next year (i.e Agon, Peavy) and had him through the 2016 and maybe 2017 season at a reasonable cost. Which fits into both Brynes and the Padres MO of the past.
So what this says to me is that there was probably some or all cobination of;
a) Padres didn’t fully buy into Latos as a franchise pitcher, albeit injury concern, clubhouse, manager disagreement, they were not fully on board. If it was KT jetision a pitcher, we would all be like “he knows something” (reference Eaton trade), but with the new management group we don’t know.
b) Padres believe that we are STACKED in pitching talent, and need to deal from a position of strength, as looking at the 2013 season we have 7-8 guys looking at real legitimate starters.
c) Brynes felt that we needed more offensive talent, and Latos has the highest market value in getting MLB ready talent. This reflects that, as 2 of the position players could make our club out of ST (although C is fairly set.)
d)Brynes has other trades out there involving a 1b/dh/LF position. Wouldn’t be surprise if one of these pieces or Rizzo/Guzman/Blanks head to the Rays shortly. Rays have like a billion all-star MI at AAA right now, and 500 Million at AA.
e)Brynes was bored, and thought he do something.
"Over? Did you say "over"? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!"
Oh, you made a new post.
As I said in the other one, I expect one of our 1b prospects to be flipped now…otherwise this move makes little sense.

I am a little reassured that Reds fans and commentators all seem to agree that the Padres got the better end of the deal.
But with all deals, we have to see how these four guys pan out. We got one MLB starting pitcher and three of the Reds’ top ten prospects. So, cross your fingers that Byrnes has the magic. I am not ready to say this was a mistake.

i’m high on luebke as well, but IMO he looks much better behind a guy like latos. Acel/Luebke/Stauffer is a much better postseason rotation than Luebke/Stauffer/Volquez
by iheartyourfart on Dec 17, 2011 2:08 PM PST up reply actions
Rather have Stauffer than Luebke in 2012
In 2013, maybe reverse.
Luebke will be tired by August 2012, and may be on a strict innings watch.
i'm not so sure
he pitched ~140 innings last year and was eased into the starting rotation. he also pitched about 140 in 2010 (including the minors) and 130 in each of the previous two years. there will probably be speed bumps on his way to 200 innings, but its not going to be like stauffer and latos where you have to expect a dead arm period.
until this year stauffer hadn’t pitched more than ~80 innings in a year since his arm surgeries. latos pitched ~50 innings in 2008, jumped to ~125 in 2009 and then 185 in 2009. all while being significantly younger than the luebs.
by iheartyourfart on Dec 17, 2011 3:33 PM PST up reply actions
it punts 2012
and you still have question marks. kelly and castro probably have the highest ceilings of any of our pitchers due to their stuff, but both need to have big big years in 2012 if they want to be considered top of the rotation type arms.
weiland and erlin could become great #2s but neither has the juice latos had.
of course luebke could develop into a cliff lee in the future but he strikes me more as a cole hamels/cj wilson type. a great pitcher but not elite.

It serves both teams well.
Alonso has all-star potential, while Grandal and Boxberger can be + contributors on a playoff team. If PetCo works for Volquez, all the better.

But true we still don’t have a classic ace-pitcher or ace prospect. Hopefully if our rotation develops 2-through-5 guys that stack up well against everyone else’s 2-5 we can still do well. Again, not ready to hate this deal. I remember the initial response to the trade for Hoffman.

Petco Park has been good to you, but the Great American Ballpark will be bad for you. It was built for Ken Griffy Jr. to hit home runs out of, not for any pitcher. Ask Aaron Harang how it feels to be a good pitcher and take the bump in a tee ball field. I do not think that Yonder is an all-star caliber player unless he gets an easy-in on a bad team. I don’t think he will ever hit more than 20-25 HRs in SD. I am not a fan of Grandal as I would rather have Mesoraco, but he is also a nice prospect at catcher that can hit. If Volquez Arm holds up then I would say you got a good deal but I am not sure that his arm will, he is still all over the place and its been some time. He has control issues before he had TJS.
Latos injury history?
Does he have any nagging injuries? That is all I am worried about from this trade. Other than that I like what I have seen of him from a far and welcome some passion in a dull pitching staff.
he had shoulder issues this season
everyone knows the padres gave him a way higher innings-load than they wanted to in 2010 and he seemed to pay for it in 2011 with some nagging shoulder soreness/weakness which cost him some time at the beginning of the season. his velocity was down to start the year as well but by the end he was back in ace form.
i doubt the shoulder problems will be anything long-term, but something to keep an eye on as per the verducci effect.

yeah I put his struggles down as like 80% due to workload
he crashed in September 2010 because they were riding him way over his safe innings limit and that has a major hangover effect into the next season. GABP will hurt his numbers but barring any emotional/maturity problems throwing him off his game, I expect he’ll do great for the Reds.
@B0wling I almost spit out my drink laughing when I read this
Man, 20-25 Homeruns? Have you not taken a look at our roster? That would easily be Allstar caliber for us. Hell, if he could do that for 10 years as a Padre, he’d have his number retired.

sweet!
If nothing else at least there will be entertainment in hearing you guys continually defend management on this one. Go Josh Byrnes! !!

From a baseball standpoint, this was a tremendous deal for us.
My handwringing when it first went down was purely emotional. I mean, I like the guy.

I don't know...
It could turn out to be a great deal, but we’re looking at 3 solid prospects that would need to mature into solid contributors to balance out Latos (assuming solid 1/2-type pitcher, which he clearly is). I don’t know that we have anyone in our system who projects to be a #1/2—type pitcher. We have a bunch of 2/3/4-type pitchers… but to win in the postseason, you need those #1 and #2 pitchers.
I also don’t like this move b/c it says 2012 is a “forfeit” year. “Ownership” thinks nothing good is going to happen this year. Otherwise you don’t move your best pitcher for a #4 starter and 3 prospects, one of whom is ready to compete with TWO of our prospects for a single position….
So, what about 2013? Well, given where all of the players involved in this trade are… We will be down an ace starter and probably have the same quality young 1B that we do now, maybe a bit better. So, 2013 seems like it was just shot in the leg. I don’t see the catching prospect out competing Hundley in 2013 (unless the prospect does really well and Hundley falters).
So, I guess we might be good in 2014 if all of our prospects everywhere pan out…? But by then most of our current young core will by in year 3 of arbitration or a free agent….
So, great…. we get to wait a few more years. We get to rebuild the rebuilding process.
The 2011 squad was a last place team.
They did not come in last due to bad luck or the maturation process. They came in last due to a lack of talent. I don’t have any issue with blowing it up.
As much as I hate to see Mat leave
This was a good deal for the Padres.

Yeah, the analysis is sounding like we got the better end of the deal
It’s just frustrating to feel that the star players never stick around, even for a few years. The turnover is getting to be too much.

Not every player on a last place team is a last place player
I don’t think you need to replace everybody. Teams need time to mesh.

You don't stop rebuilding until all the pieces are set. Doing so virtually guarantees long term suckage.
The pitching is set for the next 5-9 years. The offense was in desperate need of help and there isn’t a huge amount of talent in that regard ready to help in our minors. Gyorko should be at least average quality, Jaff Decker might be good, and Rhymer Liriano is too far away. The point is, this offense was in DEEP trouble and there wasn’t enough on the horizon to think it was going to get any better on its own.
"When you find your way. Then you see it disappear."
How do you think our rotation will set up this year?
And I hope these guys are the answer to our offense. I also wonder who is next on the trade block: Rizzo? Headley? Guzman?
25 years as a baseball fan and I'm still confused by the infield fly rule
The rotation will be a little weak for the first half of 2012.
It’ll be some combination of Stauffer, Volquez, Richard, Luebke, Bass and Moseley. After the ASB, we’ll have Erlin, Wieland, and possibly Casey Kelly to bolster the rotation. Our best pitcher IMO is Keyvius Sampson, but he won’t be ready until late 2013. Sampson offers the best chance to become an Ace of all the pitchers in our minors.
I would think Rizzo is in the cross hairs right now. I expect him to be moved for a good shortstop prospect. Headley will only be traded now for a huge haul. He’s probably staying until next year when Gyorko is ready. But, hey, Byrnes has a lot of balls, so anyone could be going now.
"When you find your way. Then you see it disappear."
can't wait to convince the dodgers that they're contenders
and get them to trade the farm for volquez
by iheartyourfart on Dec 17, 2011 9:22 PM PST up reply actions 1 recs
I wouldn't be surprised if we packaged Street and Volquez
and ship them off for yet more prospects around the ASB. We can just drop Boxy into the closers spot and bring up whoever’s performing the best out of Erlin, Wieland and Kelly.
Damn.
The future has never looked this good as a Padre fan for the last 17 years.

yeah i think everybody knew street and volquez
are short term stopgaps for the padres who are here to up their value and bring in more pieces to compliment the players who are actually in our long term plans. THIS IS WHY PETCO RULZ. we can keep turning lead into gold with pitchers and sell it to teams who get desperate at the break in order to keep replenishing our farm.

After a few hours and drinks that's how I feel as well
I am pissed to see Mat leave, but I think the guys we got, particularly Yonder and Volquez have the potential to make a big impact straight away for us. And the other two guys won’t be far behind. Now if only we could dump ODawg I could go into 2012 hopeful.
What the actual hell?
Do the Padres have any pitching left now? Ugh, I am very displeased. If Alonso was such a big deal for the Reds why has he been constantly discussed in trade rumors since the middle of this past season? Meh.
One question at a time
Do the Padres have any pitching left now?
Did you think Latos was our only good pitcher? That’s what your hyperbole implies. We wouldn’t have traded him if we didn’t have terrific pitching depth in our system.
If Alonso was such a big deal for the Reds why has he been constantly discussed in trade rumors since the middle of this past season?
Since he’s a very good 1b prospect that’s blocked by an MVP named Joey Votto.

before tim hit his dead arm period in august
he had an ERA in the 2’s over ~150 innings. he hadn’t pitched more than 80 innings in a season since his arm surgery and clearly the workload hit him hard. he doesn’t have the same kind of stuff as latos, but neither did maddux or halladay, who’s approach and repertoire tim mirrors. stauff is capable of being an ace. this was his era by month last season, excluding his opening day start which was on the last day of march:
3.14 – 4.15 – 1.98 – 3.52 – 6.68 – 3.50
he pitched like a #1 for 2 months, a #2-3 guy for 3 months, and had one month where his peripherals still looked ok, but he somehow got lit up for 10 homers (never allowing more than 3 in any other month).
in the short term, stauffer is our de facto ace again. when his cutter and breaking ball are working he’s lights out. he has to do it for a whole year to be a legit number 1, otherwise he’ll be at the top of the rotation to keep the spot warm for erlin, kelly, etc.
by iheartyourfart on Dec 17, 2011 9:38 PM PST up reply actions
All right, I admit to exaggerating; I know Latos wasn't the only good pitcher we have.
But Latos was supposed to be the Pads’ ace for the long-term, no? I don’t understand how he suddenly became expendable even with his supposed maturity issues.
(full disclosure: I’m not familiar with the Padres’ farm system; they’re only one of four MLB teams I follow and I haven’t been a fan all that long. Even if I did know who’s down in the minors, I don’t trust that they’re going to pan out in the bigs until I see it happen.)
I know Alonso was being blocked by Votto; I don’t even know why they drafted him in the first place. I just have a feeling that they found him lacking somehow, and the Padres are going to get the short end of the stick because of it.
by owllover711 on Dec 17, 2011 10:09 PM PST up reply actions
two things
1. everybody is expendable if the amount of value you get for them outweighs the value they are giving you. mat is a very good pitcher who is cost-controlled, but in exchange for him we got a pair of top 5 prospects, a dominant relief prospect, and a starter with huge upside that needed a change of scenery. the move helps us in the present and the future.
2. in the draft you don’t pick guys up based on your immediate needs, but rather by the talent that is available. after the mauer signing you’d expect the twins to be set at catcher for most of the next decade, but he might never be a full-time catcher again and nobody really saw it coming.
by iheartyourfart on Dec 17, 2011 10:24 PM PST up reply actions
I'd like to share your optimism about the players they got for Latos,
but too many prospects in similar trades for other teams I follow have ended up failing miserably for me to ever trust that they’ll work out as expected. At any rate, it’s not so much about any of that for me, so much as it is I just liked Mat Latos as a player and a person and wanted him to be “our” stud, not someone else’s. I’m sentimental like that.
Ahh, Mauer. My local AAA team is in the Twins’ farm system and Wilson Ramos was our catcher for a couple of seasons. I knew Mauer was blocking him but I had a feeling they’d regret trading Ramos at some point; I didn’t figure it would be because Mauer would be injured so often. (not that I really care all that much; I actually despise the Twins.)
fact is
we’ve never gotten as good of a package for anyone as we’ve gotten for latos.
current poll on MLBTR is who “won” the latos trade. normally i don’t think it says much to say who “wins” trades, but out of about 12,500 votes, 10,000 have voted for the padres. even if guys don’t all turn out to be stars, we could still have really improved our team.
look at it this way. i doubt the rays are regretting their trade for garza, even though its too early to decide how that’s turned out. the other most similar package i can think of is what texas got for teixeria:
elvis andrus, neftali feliz, matt harrison and jarrod saltalamacchia
by iheartyourfart on Dec 19, 2011 4:19 AM PST up reply actions
I trust jbox's tomatometer more
The MLBTR poll is good, but is bound to be tainted with the biases of east coasters who see the Reds moving 4 guys for somebody that they never see. Tomatometer has it from analysts and scouts.
Rochester is a beautiful city.
I used to spend my summers there as a kid and went to Red Wings games all the time, both at Silver Stadium and Frontier Field.

Thanks for the compliment for my hometown!
I miss Silver Stadium sometimes, but I do love Frontier Field. Alas, if only the Red Wings were doing better…darn Twinkies. Since they took over it’s been last place way too many seasons.
By all means
familiarize yourself with the farm. It’s grown into one of the best in baseball, and that was before the Latos trade. I understand your reluctance to believe in prospects because the farm has never been this good before. I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised when we start churning out good major leaguers over the next few years.
by Rich Garcia's defective eyes on Dec 17, 2011 10:33 PM PST up reply actions
I'll do some studying then.
Pardon my pessimism but I just hope all these players are still playing for this organization when they’re hitting their stride and not gone in another series of “grass is always greener” trades.
If anyone should be moved it should be Alonzo. He has never put up power numbers in the vicinity of what Rizzo has. That lack of power will be even more glaring in Petco.
I'd say the opposite.
Rizzo’s numbers are much more reliant on his power, which is sapped at Petco. His game will suffer more than Alonso because of it.
by Rich Garcia's defective eyes on Dec 17, 2011 10:20 PM PST up reply actions
this
also the power difference between alonso and rizzo isn’t huge, especially when you consider the offense-hyping nature of the PCL (his ISO jumped 50% when he got called up to AAA). the “real” difference in terms of their power strokes is a guy who is potentially 20-25 hr guy vs. a guy who is potentially a 25-30 hr guy.
the main thing to look at though is that rizzo is far less valuable when he’s not hitting for power whereas alonso is only slightly less so. you have to keep in mind that in the minor leagues, including last year in tucson, Rizzo has consistently walked about 10% of the time while striking out ~22% of the time. you can handle that when the guy mashes 30 or 40 home runs but it becomes less palatable when he isn’t leaving the yard as often. alonso strikes out ~15% of the time, while walking slightly more than rizzo. he’s also a more developed hitter with a shorter swing and more ability to go the other way. i think its a good bet that over their careers (depending on where they end up) rizzo hits more home runs whereas alonso has a better batting average and OBP.
by iheartyourfart on Dec 17, 2011 10:34 PM PST up reply actions
Excellent point.
Rizzo will be great in a home run hitter’s park in a couple years, Alonso can provide critical hitting for average and OBP now, on a team that’s pathetic in both categories. Rizzo is a great glove now, but Alonso is decent now and can get better. One key is the Padres’shortage of LH hitters. A lot was expected of Rizzo because the alternatives were RH Guzman and Blanks. Alonso is a LH hitter and more suited to Petco.
BTW, the thing about Volquez coming here is not just the Petco boost, but the fact we got Balsley, who’s a master at tweaking whatever talent a pitcher has, and Volquez has a lot to tweak. It’s also about a manager who was a pitching coach himself, and has a reputation for getting pitchers mentally prepared to pitch. Bud must have had a devil of a time trying to penetrate the force field of Latos’ ego.

So what kind of middle infield help can we trade for with these pieces?
Because that’s what it comes down to if we don’t want to repeat last year’s bed-crapping.
Personally I’d be happy to trade Rizzo/Blanks/some sort of pitching for Howie Kendrick or perhaps Ben Zobrist. Angels and Rays need a DH, right?
Yakety Sax: Making divisional matchups hilarious since 1963.
Gaslamp Ball: SMELLS LIKE PROSPECTS IN HERE

WAR has him as their best player two of the last three seasons and he fields a premium position. they do have hak-ju lee, who is one of the better SS prospects in the game though. i’ve also heard wade davis mentioned but i don’t think byrnes will want another pitcher unless he thinks he’s a potential ace.

Wade Davis
That is almost ace potential (or enough to pitch in Petco and sale to another organization as an ace)
"Over? Did you say "over"? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!"
i'm not sold on him
his numbers look ok for his age and competition, but he’s not striking out anybody and that really hurts his potential to be a #1. his velocity is ok but he’s not gonna blow it past people. his stat line reads like a #4 or 5 starter.
